Syracuse has probably the best program for what I want to do in college (Business Management and Broadcast Journalism Dual). But I do not know much about the program and how competitive it is to get into as a freshman. Is it easier to just apply to Whitman and add the dual later, or should I just go for it now and hope for the best?
I’ve visited Syracuse and attended an online Whitman information session.
My gpa is a 4.6 weighted, 3.8-3.9 unweighted, and I have a 30 ACT Composite (28M, 30R, 34E, 28S)
Extracurriculars include sports, leadership, volunteering, and part time jobs
I also already have 2 ap classes (AP Lang and APUSH) that are eligible for credit, along with taking 4 more in my senior year. I know this is important if you want to be a dual major
I would argue against just applying to Whitman and hoping to get into Newhouse later because a lot of students come to SU thinking it’ll be easy to transfer into Newhouse from the other schools and a lot of students don’t get in.
Unlike all the other colleges at SU, transferring into Newhouse doesn’t have a specific GPA that they will accept anything over. They have a limited number of spots and they’ll take the people with the highest GPAs to fill the seats they have open for people hoping to transfer in. You have to know that you’re going to ace your freshman year because all they look at is your college GPA.
I’m a Newhouse student and I had 3 kids on my floor who came to SU because of Newhouse (despite not getting in) hoping to transfer in and only 1 of them was able to do it. He basically had to have all As.
@aude22 i dont mean transferring into Newhouse, I mean adding on the dual major later. Its a program that only Whitman students can add onto their business majors
I understand that and you need to be accepted int Both colleges to do the dual majors. It’s the same process and a student transferring schools because it’s the process of trying to be accepted into Newhouse. You can just add a Newhouse major without being accepted
My daughter was admitted to Newhouse this year as an add onto her current Whitman major. I believe the GPA cut off was a 3.7. So, as shared by @aude22 above, you should only expect this if you will be at the very top of your class. It is extremely selective. You are much better off applying for the dual program initially.
Hey I’m a freshman Whitman/Newhouse student. Definitely apply for the dual now because I heard it’s a lot harder later to add the other. When you apply, I’m pretty sure you are considered for each school separately so you don’t have to worry about getting rejected from both schools. Let me know if you want to know more!
@kristenwrong thanks for the help! is management and broadcast journalism a common combination? that’s what I really want to do and only syracuse has a program like that! It’s awesome
@jjohnross People have combos all over the place so don’t worry… I actually applied as management and TRF combo and got accepted as that but I’m actually leaning towards undeclared in both. I think it’s relatively easy to switch once you’re in both anyway. Probably the most common is marketing/advertising
@loveagoodmovie i ended up applying as the business/digital and broadcast journalism dual. My superscore act is a 31 and my gpa is a 4.7 now, so hopefully i get in!! its the perfect program for my career goals so im really hoping it works out.
did he get any scholarship money? (if you dont mind me asking)
@jjohnross he got a Whitman Leadership Scholarship. $25k. Your scores are great. Your major is very specific. My S applied Whitman/Newhouse dual but not down to the specifics you mention.
