WHO ALL is applying to OXFORD at Emory..lets get a thread going!

ya i agree. And i'm actually considering georgia tech or oxford. so why should i pick oxford? (a pitch basically, i'm leaning towards oxford, but i'll wait for a little)

why is it hard to obtain a 3.5? is it like that at most other colleges?

i have a 3.85 right now and im aiming for a 4.0 in college.

I just took a class last semester and there were 2 A's out of 24 people. The rest of us got a B+ or lower, and this was a 100 level class (meaning it is meant for freshman or sophomores to take). There is no scale, and the tests take about 100 hours to study for over the month you have in between tests. The way the tests are designed make it hard to excel on them. There is a lot of "fill in the blank" on tests (with no word key, haha) on top of multiple choice, short answer and essay questions. If you take easy classes, it is easy to do well, but if you're pre-med, nursing or business its a different story. The classes weed out the unfit, so I guess it is harder than most colleges. BTW- I went to main campus under 10 times last semester. I went for halloween because there were 20+ kegs at a block party on on-campus apartments, and I go sometimes to the library at Main campus because you can download music and get any DVD for free, and the environment in the library at main campus is much nicer. A lot more money gets dumped into main campus, but it is also more expensive to go there. I find I have the most fun at Oxford because I don't need to find a ride anywhere, and I always get to do what I want to do for the most part there...

My SATs are below Oxford's 25th-50th percentile. I a m pretty sure I ahve the grades though.

What qualifies as an amazing essay? Also, I have not yet visited the campus because I live in NJ. I am planning on visiting it within the next month. Also, the reason I did not visit earlier is because I only recently discovered the school. But once I read about it I thought it was a perfect match. The only reason I did not apply early was because I had never been on the campus.
What do you recommend will help me when i visit? Are there interviews? Do you think it is a problem if I only begin making frequent visits after the application due date?

HEY SO what’s up this year’s applicants?!! how many of you got accepted and and planning on coming to Oxford?!

If taking Pre-Med makes you get <3.5 GPA how are you supposed to go to medical school?

I mean, since it’s THAT hard, then I’m assuming if you go to a state college you’ll pull off 3.8+ in premed no problem.

So it gets down to this: <3.5 at Emory or 3.8+ at a state college. Which one gets you into a better medical school, especially when they don’t even care about what college you went to for undergrad that much?

Working your butt off to get a 3.3 at Emory or 3.8 at a state college is a huge difference.

I got accepted into Oxford =D

I don’t know if I’m going to go though. Living in California, my parents favor the UCs over Oxford. So unless Oxford throws in some generous financial aid, it will be difficult to convince my parents. Also, dpending on whether I get accepted to the business unde grad schools I’ve applied to, I need to make a decision whether I want to do business under grad or Oxford liberal arts/Emory under grad.

Accepted! Yay! May or May Not Attend.

Post Stats Later

Accepted. and really excited
I live in Florida, Black Female
GPA UW: 3.8 or 9, i dk

3 in my class

29 ACT
1340 SAT

(Making this super brief, but I hope that’s okay)

Accepted! I have to see what my financial aid is like though.

My school doesn’t rank
GPA UW: 3.8ish (It really depends on what my grades are after this semester)
SAT: 2030 (out of 2400)
I live in Canada, and I’m Pakistani.

Accepted! Most likely going, nervous/excited enough…

Asian Female from CT (although I doubt this matters)
no class ranking (top half, guess)
3.3 GPA (WEIGHTED, even worse unweighted)
1200/1600 SAT

I have no idea how I got in. It’s funny, you guys are posting your 3.8 GPAs and I’m just like…yeah…3.3 WEIGHTED…okay then. Only two people from my high school have applied to Oxford. One got in with a 3.4 and the other was rejected with a 3.1. So I was definitely a borderline acceptance!

Your extracurriculars maybe.

Congrats, though. That’s a very impressive accomplishment with your GPA!

Accepted as well! Congrats to everyone! :D

I’m not sure if i’m going to go either, waiting on Emory’s decision. Not sure if i want to go to Emory or Oxford. But my final decision definitely depends on scholarships/financial aid that i get from them. Btw, has anyone applied for Oxford scholars? What about Emory’s?

My stats arent so good but here goes:
SAT: 1940
ACT: 29
Rank: 7% (forgot total number of students and actual number!)
GPA UW: 3.75

I live like 15 minutes away from Oxford and I’m Bengali (from Bangladesh).

melin720, which medical schools do you want to get into? I want to go to Emory’s and they do consider where you did your undergrad, so they would know how much effort you have to put in, if bringing up gpa is hard etc.

“Emory accepts students from state schools, as well as private schools. We do not consider students from any particular college or university to be more prepared for medical school than others, although we do recognize that some schools are more academically rigorous than others. What you do and accomplish during your undergraduate career speaks more highly of your preparation for medical school, than does a degree from a particular institution.” Admissions

take a look :)

Also, for those of you going premed, what do you think of getting a bs/ms in bio in 4 years??

<melin720, which=“” medical=“” schools=“” do=“” you=“” want=“” to=“” get=“” into?=“”></melin720,>

ANY medical school. My plan is simple: do my best, and go wherever my best would let me.

Please, don’t apply to Oxford! I got deferred! The school SUCKS, it’s not worth it NOOO! You’ll be wasting $50 on your application! Everyone there will screw you over in two seconds, it’s not worth it.

Just kidding…

(Yeah, man, if fewer people apply for RD I get higher chance of getting in. So please don’t apply. There are so many other colleges. Thank you.)

–

It’d be funny if I get waitlisted RD.

I got in EA
…i am super excited…
i can only go w/ song financial aid though.

um…
3.5
1210
don’t know why i got in
showed interest in computer science by taking several comm college classes

Congratulations on your acceptance. You earned it fair and square.

Don’t know how you got in? Well, something in your application must’ve clicked with the admissions people.

Have fun next year!

Hi, I’m applying for Oxford this upcoming year. Do you know if the college count your weighted or unweighted gpa?

Hey, I’m applying this year! Oxford actually recalculates your GPA. If your school reports numerical grades, they recalculate your GPA as 90-100=A, 80-89=B, 70-79=C, 60-69=D, and 0-59=F. You can see what they’ll recalculate your GPA as here: [Oxford College - GPA Calculator](http://oxford.emory.edu/admission/gpa_calculator/). They don’t “weight” your recalculated GPA, but they do look at the rigor of your course load.

This thread is actually from last year. I’m trying to start a new thread for this year (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/emory-university/1061698-oxford-thread-questions-conversation.html</a>); feel free introduce yourself. :)
