I applied to both Army and Navy. I got 2 nominations to Navy, and as of yesterday, I have an appointment to Army. Now I really want to hear from Navy. I don't want to hold on to this appointment too long if I'm going to get one from Navy. Anybody know how I can find out if/how long until I hear back from Navy? I don't want to sit on this appointment too long, because I want the next person to have a chance to think about it before deciding.

Start pressuring your BGO. Does he/she know you got the Army appointment? Your BGO is your true guidance counselor. They'll know the right thing to do. And they can tell you when your going before the board at Navy.

At the risk of sounding completely heartless, SCREW the other guy!

You have earned an appointment to the United States Military Academy. It is YOURS to do with what you wish. Were I you, I would consider myself as going to West Point unless Navy also offers you an appointment, at which point you have the very enviable task of choosing between two of the finest universities in the world.

I admire your desire to help your fellow applicants, but they didn't help you get where you are. YOU earned it ALONE. Now YOU have the RIGHT to choose what's best for YOU.

Congratulations on your achievement! You and your family should be EXTREMELY proud!

That said, I sure hope Navy replies soon. I'd hate to have yet another kindred spirit be sucked into the dark, dank hole of Woopdom. ;)

My son's BGO told him to accept everything while waiting for Navy, including other appointments. He said you are not obligated to anyone until you step onto their campus, be it USMA, USNA, etc.

That's exactly right.

I'd be happy with USMA, but I really want Navy. Too bad I can't trade it in for a USNA appointment. I'll probably make some phone calls tomorrow to see if I can figure out if/when I'd get a USNA appointment. Hopefully it will be soon.

Yeah I could say screw the next guy, but if someone holds out on the USNA appointment until May, I might be a little annoyed if they offered it to me at the last minute. I'd rather someone not screw me by holding onto it for so long then not taking it. I don't want to be that guy. Since my USMA nomination was reported to the academy at the same time as my second USNA nomination, maybe I'll hear about it soon.

Again, I admire your desire to do the "right" thing, but you need to be viscously Darwinian at this point. Hold on to that USMA appointment until you hear from USNA.

Now, if you know that if USNA says "no", that you will not be attending USMA, then by all means turn it in and see if they give it to someone else. However, if there is the slightest chance that you WILL use it, then HOLD ON TO IT. You worked hard to get it; don't give it away if you might use it.

I'm not gonna give it up until iI need to, but USNA is my first choice school, and as all high school students are with their first choice school, I want to hear sooner rather than later. I'm just saying that it would be a lot easier for me and others if USNA would give me a decision ASAP, and hopefully that decision is to offer me an appointment.

Oh, I hear ya, man. Waiting sucks.

However, you may want to start getting used to it. The military's collective motto should be, "Hurry up and wait."

Let us know! :)

ETA: For the record, I applied to USNA and USAFA. I withdrew my application to USAFA early in the process because I really only wanted to go USNA.

I wonder, though, if things should have been different. Four years in the foothills of the Rockies. Learning to fly. Sigh....

I got an LOA and an appointment from both West Point and USNA. I'm choosing USNA. I also applied to Air Force Academy. I got two nominations for each. Those of you who want to go to more than one Academy make sure to apply to your local Congressperson. Often they give out one for each to you.

I have a waiverable eye condition for USNA, so that could delay, or lose my chances for admission. I got form my congressman a nomination to each USNA and USMA, plus one of my senators gave me one to USNA. Once I got my applications in the fall, I felt like jsut giving up because I thought I didn't have a chance at either academy and didn't want to spend so much time on applications to places where I'd be denied. So glad I didn't give up.

I had always contemplated applying to USAFA but I decided to just apply to USNA because that's where my heart was, every now and then though I wonder if I should have applied to USMA and continued with my application to USAFA but I don't think I would have been happy at either.

I got an eye waiver for USNA and my eyes are PRETTY BAD, so hopefully that won't disqualify you. I also had to get waivered for immunotherapy from USNA and USMA....and now have both appointments in hand. I chose Navy!

Zaphod were you accepted into the USNA???

You need to read a little more here....

Zaphod graduated with the finest USNA class ever....Class of '91 ;)

Correct! :D

Back to the question at hand...

Dd applied to, and has appointments to: AFA, CGA and USNA.

Were these appointments from senator/congressional nominations? If the USNA appointment was from a senator/congressman, how long after the nomination was reported to the academy was the appointment offered?

Yes, these were MOC noms. She had her nomination for Navy on 12/10, LOA on 12/22 and appointment on 1/29. For AFA, she had her LOA on 12/09, her nom on 12/17 and the appointment on 12/29. It was a good Christmas...

My memory is failing me...

I also applied to USCGA. They sent me to NAPS, too, but called me 48 hours after USNA did! :D

I was fortunate. I got my first choice after all. Thank you, Lord! :)
