Who applied to the Fellows Program?

I'll be at both! See you guys there!

momreads, i got the invitation to both the fellows and CBHP, and Alabama contacted me about combining the two trips. they said they have a lot of people interviewing for both programs and they want us to miss as little school as possible, which i think is extremely generous of them. im sure if your son gets it, they will let him do the same. Anyone booked their flights yet?

Momreads: What kind of email from the Fellows Office? My son also applied and is waiting to see if he gets the invitation? We live in south Alabama so I don't know if he should be worried or not at this point. I don't know if they were mailed alphabetically, by region or if there was any kind of order to the mailing list.

Srobin, we sent a note to the Fellows office, because we learned that the CBHP and Fellows interviews might be at different times -- they are. We were concerned that we had heard nothing from the Fellows but with good reason. We live in rural VA, and we had ice and snow here for days. That delayed a lot of our mail. We have to call the CBHP office on the 2nd to let them know that we cannot say when our son is coming, because we do not know his status with the Fellows program. I'm not sure how they were mailed out. Wish I could be of more assistance.

Mesquite_girl 24, we'd love to set flight arrangements. At least we have been checking on the internet to see what flies into Birmingham.

Mesquite_girl 24, my son will see you and the others at the CBHP. Did not get the Fellows, but is not disappointed.

Rejected. Crushed.

Mesquite_girl24, so sorry to hear about the University Fellows. Will this end your thoughts of going to UA? My son got into the CBHP, and he now lists UA among his top choices. He will, however, wait until all his admission decisions are final in late March. Still, he really likes what he sees at UA.

isnt it a huge scholarship if you are even invited to fellows? not sure that i would be crushed about that.

i would like to know more about the CBHP and what kinds of students apply and get accepted for that.

or maybe i have this one confused with another one.

MikeWozowski, the CBHP is the computer-base honors program. It is part of the UA honors college. My son applied at the last minute – as he put it, he really did not know much about it other than what he read online. About 160 students applied for it this year – a total of 40 were accepted. The name of the program is misleading – it is not for computer people. Rather, it is a research-based program, and that’s why my son really likes the idea.

Students take CBHP 101 and 102 as freshmen – they are taught two computer languages that can be applied when doing research. As sophomores, they work as research assistants to a professor of their choice/major on a project. The project can be short- or long-term. CBHP also can serve as a minor for the student since he or she takes certain classes within the program.

Competition for entry into the program is very high. Last year, the average CBH kid had an SAT of 1470 (CR and M) or 33 on the ACT. They also compete for various full and partial scholarships within the department, as well as those on campus.

As for my son, he wants to study chemistry and economics. Many of the students interested in the CBHP are engineering or science majors but it is open to all majors. The idea of working with a professor on a research project excites my son, and that’s one of the big reasons why he’s interested in UA.

Hope this helps.

my DD is interested in UA, but she hasn’t taken the SAT or ACT yet, so i am not sure where we stand yet.

def. need to qualify for 2/3 or full tuition for it to be an option, as we are OOS.

the CBHP sounds interesting, but it mit not be within her reach.

You may be thinking of the UGA Foundation Fellows program. They invite X amount of kids to campus for a weekend, for interview. A certain amount of kids get the Fellowship, but some don’t and the ones that don’t get the Ramsey, which I believe is still a full-ride.

Oh, and momreads, I always assumed CBHB was for computer/tech people, so I never bothered to look into it, lol. Thanks.

Coollege, that was the reason why my son did not want to get involved – he thought it was for computer/tech types. Then, he went down for the interview, and it changed everything.

MikeWozowski, definitely have your daughter take the SAT/ACT soon so she can see where she’s at. UA was not even on the radar screen until the last four or so months. Then, he saw what incredible programs are offered, along with the scholarship opportunities, and that changed his thinking. He managed to convince his best friend to apply – she probably isn’t going there but she did apply. He already has talk to another girl, who is an outstanding flute/sax player, about the school. She is close to that 2/3 mark after one take of the SAT. She wants to take it again, and then, maybe visit the school later this year.

momreads- i loved the fellows program so much that it made UA my top choice, but apparently, they didnt see that. it is not off my list completely since i did get into CBHP, but i just dont know if i could go to that school without fellows and still get into a top grad school. plus right now im just really depressed by the rejection. i loved it soooo much, but i was one of only like 10 to get turned down. i just dont understand. and i dont know if i could go to UA without resenting them for four years. it just wouldnt be the same. no individual mentoring, no leadership classes. things would be much harder. and not to be arrogant, but i thought i deserved the program. i guess im still in the anger and denial stage of dealing with it. Maybe next i move onto bargaining stage.

I thought only about 10% get accepted, not 10 people turned down.???

I thought they had like 500+ people apply, and they only take like 50 kids.

Good luck, I’m sure you’ll latch on somewhere you’ll like!

they did, but i made it to the finalist weekend with 50 kids, and from there they take like 40.

Mesquite_girl 24, I know that you are smarting right now. But give it a couple of days. Then, look at all the good things at UA has to offer. My son did not make it to the Fellows finals. At first, he was unhappy, but he is looking at the positives of the school – including all the wonderful people whom he has met. CBHP will give you a chance to work with professors – and that can and will be wonderful mentorships. Such an opportunity might lead to a great graduate school situation, too. I have a niece who got a teaching assistantship in grad school. She really did not enjoy the teaching experience, but her supervising professor thought enough of her to offer her a chance to come with him to do research at Cornell. So hang in there.

momreads, did your daughter graduate from UA? grad school is something i am concerned about if i go there without fellows. i know that Fellows would have helped me get into an excellent grad school, but idk know.

No, I have a son who is interested in attending UA. As for grad school, I have a friend who has been teaching more than 30 years. He told my son that undergrad work is what you make it, including the opportunities presented. You might meet a professor – regardless of what school you attend – who will have the right connection to help you get into whatever grad school you desire. As an undergrad, I took a history class on the American Civil War. I enjoyed the professor so much that I took every class he taught and got a degree in history. He wrote my recommendation that helped me to land my first job.

Go speak with your guidance counselor or a trusted teacher. See what he or she says. Send a note to the honors college and express your concern. They might give you the assurance you need. Much good luck.

thanks:) my GC emailed Alabama, and so did my parents, and im thinking of writing a letter to them expressing my concern and telling them how much it meant to me, without being all dramatic and such.

It would be interesting to find out if there is a waitlist. Maybe then you still have a chance should someone turn down the opportunity to attend UA for another school. I wish you much luck in your quest.
