Hey, any athletes told by Bowdoin coaches to apply ED? S is being recruited and trying to decide whether to apply ED1 or ED2. Anyone going through the same?

My S is a freshman at Bowdoin, not a recruited athlete, but he did apply ED last year. I know when he was admitted and joined the FB group of admitted students, he felt like many, if not most, seemed to be recruited athletes. He sings, and I teased him they admitted him because Bowdoin needed SOMEBODY to sing the National Anthem at all the athletic events!

I also recall a year ago a post of a recruited athlete who was told by a coach to apply ED1, but applied instead to Pomona for ED1, was rejected, and was concerned about his chances for ED2. I have no idea how it turned out, though:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/bowdoin-college/1261946-i-have-better-chance-rd-than-ed2.html

Coaches at Bowdoin (and all the NESCACs) have a limited number of “tips” to help a recruit through the admissions process. Tips are doled out primarily in connection with the ED process as tips are limited in number. Even waiting until ED2 can be chancy as many are doled out in ED1. So your S should listen carefully to what the coach is saying as to when to apply and whether it matters whether he applies ED1 or ED2.

Bowdoin coaches probably are no different from other DIII coaches in urging EDI for their recruits. S was recruited 2 years ago and was considering other options, so applied EDII instead of EDI. He was admitted. The important thing to know is whether coach is supporting your application and where you are on the coach’s list if coach is supporting your app. Coach should also let you know how likely admission is based on non-athletic resume. The sooner a coach can firm up the team and lock up his/her top recruits, the better it is for the coach. There are opportunities for walk-ons, too, at Bowdoin in some sports.
