I don't know about you but I am a little apprehensive about letting Carolina choose my roomate for me. I think that I will probably try to find a friend from school or link up with someone like me online. Tell me what you think??

I say just have one randomly picked and see how things work out. College is all about meeting new people, and there's not a whole lot of point in living with one of your high-school friends when you have already seen them every day for years, and will continue to see them on a regular basis, especially if you live in the same dorm.

I have heard, however, that this is a big disadvantage to out of staters. Most students from NC already have friends from HS or Governor's School with whom they room and hangout, which in turn "closes the circle" on students who come from Georgia and don't know anybody.

yeah, i'd rather room with someone random so i could meet new people. and if it turns out that you and your roomie totally clash, you can always request a new roomate. they'd never keep you together if it was bad.

i requested to room with someone from high school, just becuase I was worried that UNC would stick me with someone I wouldn't get along with. Well that was a HUGE mistake. Remember your gonna live with this person for about a year in 1 bedroom thats going to replace your house. We didn't last the semester, he moved out and I've been in single since. But I have a friend I met at UNC who's having problems with his roommate and so he's moving in with me. I'd recommend letting unc find a random person, unless you are really good friends with who your requesting and I'd recommend spending the night at each others house too before you start school.

OK... here's what i think you should do. Try and meet someone who seems kind of like you, they don't have to be your BFF or anything like that, but someone who seems like they have a similar lifestyle and you could get along with, at EXPLORE CAROLINA or a random campus tour.. Or if you have some obscure connection or know OF someone or kind of know them, talk to each other and see if you think you'd get along. I went random and it did NOT work out, but then again I do know of several people who got great random roomies, so I guess it's just a matter of luck. However, do NOT worry about being out of state. I think the out of state kids adjust the best. A lot of people at UNC stay stuck in high school and stay with their little clique, and many often remark how well the out of state students adjust in making tons of new friends. gooooood luck! :)
