So, go on!

I’m not applying, but I’m a current PLME first year at Brown, so feel free to contact me with any questions!

I am! I hope I get in and you too!

I am too Good luck to all CC applicants!

great! I’ve been wanting to ask a current PLME student some queries for a while now
@bruno14
so, I read in a thread at CC that PLME is not as good as everyone says it is, because the Alpert Medical School is, according to them not so good compared to other med schools.
Up until that one/two threads that I read, I was completely fine with the PLME as my first choice. So, what would you advise me? Should I not have focused on PLME because of the med school, or do all the other benefits of BROWN cancel that out??
(I know my question seems sort of out of place, i mean who asks if going to an IVY and then to the PLME under BROWN is worth it, I am not demeaning an Ivy league, just asking some opinions, so no flaming please)

No flaming, I promise. It’s a totally valid question, and even my mom likes to mention that I should come home to CA and go to Stanford or UCSF for med school.

Here’s the deal. Alpert Medical School isn’t at the very top of med schools. But the question is whether the prestige of the medical school you attend matters that much. Sure, it’s a bad sign when a doctor’s degree is from some little unknown med school, but Alpert’s not that far down. It’s a relatively new school (first degrees granted in 1975), especially in comparison to Harvard, Yale, etc. If you look on the residency match list, stuff is really on its way up ([Match List](<a href=“About | The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University”>About | The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University)). There are some extremely impressive matches on there.

All in all, I would say that the benefits of Brown and PLME far outweigh the not-perfect med school. I’m pretty sure I’ll stay right now, but I’m listening to my mom and keeping my options open, especially because I’m only halfway through my first year and already think I may lose all my limbs to frostbite before graduation :).

Hope this helps and feel free to ask any other questions!

not too many PLME…
I guess the more chance me, manu101, and fe2011 have of getting accepted without the regular large number of amazingly talented people from the cc crowd :D

I’m applying next year ED, but…my GPA sucks…and I’m not quite sure about teacher recs, which are the two most IMPORTANT things!!

I might apply to PLME next year,
so I was wondering, for the class of 2016, can you still apply out to other medical schools and have a guaranteed spot at Alpert? Or did the new deal only affect current students?

Cyberchondriac: As far as I know, that “deal” affects all PLME students from now forward. However, it’s a guaranteed spot, but possibly not within your graduating class. For example, if I choose to apply out, I’d end up giving up my spot in the med class of 2018 and end up probably starting with the 2019 class if I chose to go to Brown.

@bruno14

wait what do you mean? I thought the guaranteed spot was gone if you applied out? in reality is it that we still get the guarantee, but not for the year that we applied out?

@kokome
good luck picking up that GPA and falling in love with your teachers(…just kidding about love :)). I am not having the exact same problem, but, this senior year, my GPA dropped from a 4.0 to a 3.5, so far. But, I can almost certainly bring it up to 4.0. I know my school is weird, they calculate a separate GPA for 1) Half-yearly exams, 2) Mock 1, 3) Mock 2 ,etc.
where the mocks are 1 month apart and get GPA’s of their own
whew

Studyzone: The website’s information is here. [Brown University: Program in Liberal Medical Education](<a href=“The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University”>The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University)

Basically, you can apply back in. However, I’ve heard it said that you’ll have a very good chance of getting in - nearly guaranteed if you’ve kept up with PLME stuff and been a good student.

hmm i was thinking about applying to brown plme, but I’m just a little unsure whether I’d want to stay in Providence for 8 years. Do you like providence? Do you ever feel bored there? I’ve heard that it’s pretty boring and I didn’t spend too much time there when i visited. I just want to know a little more about the surrounding area so I can see if can picture myself there for 8 years.

I applied. add me to the list. Though PLME is just iceing on the cake!

Stanleyrabbit:

I like Providence a lot. I’m from right between San Francisco and San Jose, CA, so I’m used to the city, but Providence isn’t too overwhelming of a city. The area between College Hill (where Brown and RISD are) and downtown is easily walkable, and public transportation is awesome. We have free bus/anything else within RI with a Brown ID, and it’s only a $7.50 or so ride to Boston from just blocks away from Brown. If you’re into big cities, it’s not hard to get to New York, and some of my friends have just taken a weekend and headed there by bus or train.

Some parts of Providence are sketchy, I’ll admit. But what city is that not true for? I’ve got a great gig volunteering at an elementary/middle school in north Providence - we run an afterschool math tutoring program for underprivileged girls. It’s great to see the girls finally understand topics and start to succeed, and they look up to the college students so much.

I never feel bored in Providence. There are always things happening on Brown and RISD campuses, and besides that there’s everything in the city proper. If the mall’s your thing, Providence has a HUGE shopping mall including a food court and a big movie theater with IMAX. That’s where we all went to the premiere of the new Harry Potter movie :)

Hope this helps! I can give you any more Providence info if you want.

Bruno14 Does Brown conduct PLME interviews? Rochester is hosting their REMS early med acceptance next weekend and so wondering if PLME brings candidates together for interviews and to meet faculty too. UMiami did their interviews in 3 waves, starting last month.

PLME does not specifically conduct PLME interviews. If you’re interviewed for Brown admissions, cool. If not, it won’t hurt your chances at all.

Good. Had a great interview with local Brown alumni about a month ago. Does the PLME notification come with regular admission notification on April 1?
And do you have any POV on PLME vs. Rochester REMS?

Yes, PLME notification comes with regular admissions letters. No point of view - I didn’t apply to any other BS/MD programs. For me, it was always Brown first and PLME second.

I applied to PLME. I’m obviously not getting my hopes up, but it seemed to be worth a shot.
