It is too prone to erroneous grading. I don't trust the essay graders. Judging the quality of an essay is too subjective. A 25 minute essay is the most unreliable way to judge someone's writing skills. I wish it could just die. I utterly despise the essay and condemn it as evil. Does anyone else concur?

yeah i hate it..

i got an 8,8,11 ...

although my 11 essay was good..., but yeah the topics are way too random to judge a writers ability... that one where i got an 11 was just "perfect" for me

i love how you employed colloquillism as a gesture of protest against the essay fo shizzle my dizzle after televizzle
g-unit

i got learn some of that new vocab... all those unfamiliar terms :(

hate the essay..worst thing that happened..lets protest or something

ALSO..who ELSE thinks that the WHOLE SAT shouldnt even exist..worst thing to test 'intellingence' i like SAT Subject test and AP's Better.. :)

The essay only bugs me because there are only 2 graders. I got an 11 both times, and not that I'm complaining because I know that's good but what that means is that 2 out of the 4 graders thought my essay was worthy of that perfect 6. And, just at random, I got two graders who maybe were a little bit tougher and gave it a 5, when obviously some of the graders would have given it a 6. I know that works both ways, I could have gotten two 5s just as easily.

It's completely subjective and on an important test like this, it sucks. But, I happen to like the writing section and have done the best on it, so I don't mind it bringing up my composite lol.

They basically just tagged the SAT II Writing to the Reasoning test and got rid of the SAT II on it. It was required at a lot of schools anyway, so removing it would probably do very little. At schools that don't require subject tests it would make a difference, but not at ones that do.

Also, the essay isn't weighted anywhere close to as heavy as the MC questions. I only got a 9/12 but pulled a 770 on the writing section.

I don't think the essay should be taken out. I love the essay. Ok, I'm strange, I know. I don't know the exact proportions or anything, but whne you get 10+, the essay really doesn't do anything to your score.

I missed 8, 12 essay=690

Why remove the essay simply because some of you guys got bad scores on it? Sure it's subjective to an extent, but THE ONLY WAY writing is judged is through human graders. It's not like there's an alternative for machines to grade essays (which may happen in the future). Using the same argument, I could propound that we drop the Verbal Section because I find Critical reading to be pile of horse**** as well. The passages can be interpreted in many ways and sometimes I disagree with CB's answers. In the real world, having better writing skills is more important than being able to "critically read", although I doubt that the Verbal section even tests that ability. Moreover, the SAT DEFINITELY does not test intelligence. You know how to solve a problem or the definition of a word b/c simply put, you've seen it before. No one can just "figure it out". If they did, our society would not be where it is today.

I got a 9 then 11, one of which raised my score. Essay don't bother me, so keep it. :)

We can't do anything about it.

Might as well study hard and write a good one on the test.

I wish they didnt remove the analogy section. It was the only section on the old SAT that I managed to ace.

Keep it. This test is much better than the old version; I hated analogies.

I want it removed!!! Down with the Essay!!!

The only reason they put it is because other tests started using essays.
It's useless.
Get rid of it!!!!

The essay needs to rot in hell.

Received an 8 on the essay..thought I had done a little better than that, but oh well. I do agree that the essays need to be removed though. No one should be expected to come up with a mindblowing essay in 25 minutes.

I agree with what someone else said...

"all the ppl with low scores don't want it; all the ppl with high scores want it"

I think you should be able to come up with a mindblowing essay-especially if you're aiming for the Ivies, which most CCers are.

Instead of essay bashing, maybe the thread should be:

Essays or Analogies?

I don't think Analogies are that hard, but they aren't as fun and thought-provoking as essays. If you ask me, I'd rather have the grid-in math questions removed from the SAT.

I got a 12, and I think the essay should be taken off the SAT.

25 minutes is not enough time for ANYONE to write a good essay, and it in no way measures one's ability to write. In addition, I think the essays are the only section of the SAT/ACT tests that are unfair, as they are open to opinion.

The SAT at least has two graders look at an essay and brings in a 3rd if the scores given are drastically different, but still, I don't like the essays.

So there...not everyone with high scores wants it. I'd rather get out 25 minutes earlier and simply answer questions that pertain to knowledge of general topics.

They dont call it the Essay T for nothing
