Who determines amount of Pell Grant?

When I filed the FAFSA, I received an e-mail stating that my Pell Grant would be $4,000. The school send my financial aid package had a $3,600 Pell Grant and a $1,000 Fed Supplement Grant.

Did the school determine that I didn't need that extra $400 and not give it to me? Is that normal?

Also, what determines how much you get from the Supplemental Grant? Am I actually coming out with more than I would have?

Thanks!

Your FAFSA EFC determines your Pell amount…not the school.

However, since the school gave you less, then likely one of your schools found an error on your FAFSA and corrected it and your EFC rose a bit.

The school decides how much SEOG money it can give you. I think the range is something like $400 - 4000 or something like that SEOG isn’t a given…the school decides if and how much…

Thanks, you are always helpful  That is good to know that the Pell Grant is dependent on EFC and the SEOG is not.

Is there anyway to see if my EFC was changed and, if it was changed, to how much?

At the time the award was given, we didn’t file the FAFSA yet (it was in December). Could they have estimated incorrectly in December?

Possibly…call them and ask if there needs to be a Pell adjustment based on your actual EFC.

The award schedule for Pell grants changes from year to year.

Here is the award schedule for SY 2012-13

http://ifap.ed.gov/dpcletters/attachments/P1201Attach20122013PaymentSchedules.pdf

If your award was estimated before the new schedule was post in mid-January, it’s quite possible the estimates was wrong.

(EFC limits for the Pell were lowered for SY 2012-13 and the amount of the grants were reduced.)

Both the new and old Schedules have me at $4,000, it seems. It could be that we didnt even fill out the FAFSA at that time, so they were just ballparking. I’ll contact them next week and see what we can do.

Thanks mom2ck and wowm!
