Who do I talk to?

Good evening all,

I'm applied to a few different schools, and almost completely decided that I will not be coming back to my current school next semester. My question is this: Who exactly do I talk to at my current school? How do I go about cancelling my dorm and all that? My academic adviser is not helpful, to say the least. Also, I'm concerned about whether my roommates will incur additional expenses since I will no longer be splitting the cost of a dorm, so how would I go about resolving that?

Thanks!

Your academic advisor isn’t helpful because this isn’t an academic issue. That said, they should have been able to tell you that you need to contact the Housing/Residence office of your school to ask them how to proceed.

Go to the administration building, ask to speak to someone in the registrar’s office and the residence/housing office. Explain what you are doing and they will know where to point you…make sure you have an acceptance in hand before you withdraw. Otherwise, you may want to ask for a leave of absence while you finalize plans. I don’t believe your dorm mates will occur any expenses on your account unless you live someplace you have signed a lease…

Your roommates will not have to pay your share, Housing will move another student into your spot.
Once you to cancel your Housing contract you can’t change your mind and expect to be placed back in your same dorm if you decide to stay at your current college.

Your roommates won’t be given additional charges. They usually have a waiting list of students who want to get into the dorms and, they will either not fill the room or place someone into your slot. You usually advise the admissions office that you are not returning and you can also advise the housing office that you won’t be returning.

Thanks all.

I do NOT have any acceptance in hand yet… It is a bit of a predicament, as the schools are either not giving a decision until December 15th, or they need my transcript with this semester’s grades. I’m afraid that if I wait until I have a decision in hand that it will be too late to withdraw from my current school. That being said, would I be able to take a leave of absence for the spring semester and then withdraw altogether once I finalize my plans (or end up back here at my current school, if nothing pans out)?

Thanks again.

Each school has their own policies regarding a leave…I think you should start by going to your school’s website and searching for “leave of absence”. if nothing definitive comes up, call or visit the office of the registrar. They should be able to give you the info you need…do you know when your tuition is due for Spring? Would you be willing to return for Spring semester if not accepted elsewhere or would you want to take a leave anyway and apply to other schools for next fall? Make sure you have clear answers to all these questions before you leap. Good luck!
