I'm a US high school student and I thought it would be interesting to look at University of Sydney (Australia). It's a nice school as far as I can tell, but when I went to the "international minimum requirements" page for acceptance, the major I was most interested in required SAT total score of 2350 or higher! Could it really be that good or do they just hate Americans??

Maybe someone could tell me if international admissions are a b**** everywhere...

that is a bit crazy...they probably just don't want americans applying, like they realize that all the teachers and doctors and stuff would probably end up leaving australia after they finish school, so they dont want to bother educating you if you'll just leave the country...meanwhile there are plenty of, i am sure, perfectly qualified aussies to do the jobs. or not. either way, im just glad im not applying to the university of sydney :)

Well, it's weird though...at that particular site, you could get into most engineering programs with, like, 1700s or so, but anything with the word math was 2350.

maybe cause they do higher level math in high school in aussieland?...or actually i have absolutely no idea, but that could make sense, right?

that's really weird...i am not trying to say that its a bad univ but 2350 is better than most of the IVY league requirements...

Well the university of Sydney is the best school in the world..
All the smart people go there

Ask anyone from Asia who speaks decent English and (s)he will tell you that getting into non-critical courses in any Australian university is a walk in the park.

Yes, Australians despise Americans, they absolutely loathe those who are not loyal to the crown, those who commit treason.....TRAITORS!!!

cheers mate!

Hey all, I'm from Australia so hopefully I can give u some insight.

The uni of Sydney IS one of the best schools in Australia, but it definitely doesn't compare to schools like Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc... Australia doesn't have the SAT or ACT, but another test called the HSC. If you want to get into medicine or law in Sydney Uni, your HSC score has to be very high (around 99 out of 100).

I would say that a 99/100 HSC score is around 2300 or higher, but I wouldn't say that it's an SAT score of above 2350.

I don't know if I helped you out at all, but hopefully I did :)

Oh, and btw, Australian don't hate Americans. Don't know why you would think that.

Dear stanford123,

You have failed 'Sarcasm 101'.

2350? This must be a joke! Here in Singapore, Australian unis are held in rather low regard. More often than not, it's only those who can't get into local/US/UK unis who go to Australian unis... and by Australian Unis I mean the elite ones within the grp of 8 (their version of ivy league). And it seems like everyone here can get in, so long as you are willing to pay.

What!?!?!
Here in India, Aussie univs aren't considered very respectable. 2350 isway too high!

no its not too much like that ASP,i mean not on level terms with the unis of the US or UK...

Compared to how much we aussies pay- internationals at our colleges pay soo much more. The fact is- as government funding decreased, for most colleges, internationals = $$$$. Simple economics. The bottom line is that most students are still local aussies so in many regards- those internationals with money pretty much pay for parts of our education. All we have to do is put up with a few dead****s and people with more money than common sense and in return we get a better overall education.

As too how much our uni's are held with regard... well its really a matter of opinion and perception.

And Clenden, as you know- most subjects don't require a 2325 SAT. Most only need 1800's or so. The 2325 comes in for the high demand specialised courses. Its mostly found for the specialised maths courses and double degrees involving maths.

If you look at the equivalents, whether it is for A-levels or indian SC or whatever, the requirements are pretty darn high by any measure. If they can fill up the course with entry requirements like a 98 UAI or 2325 SAT then why would they lower the mark for you?

2325??????
