Who else already has assignments due on the first day of class?

For those who haven't yet begun fall classes, and especially those in upper division courses: do you already have assignments to complete for the first day of class? If so, what are you supposed to prepare/do?

One of my professors has already assigned a few chapters out of a text. In addition, we have to prepare a short, 4-6 page paper discussing and analyzing the content of what we read. Considering that this is a seminar, and that I'm a history student, I'm not too surprised that I already have work to complete.

Anyone else?

Not this semester (though I do have an online class before the semester starts) but there have been times where I have had work due before class started. In one class we had a test on the first day (note to fr that is less likely than having to turn in work on the first day which even that hasnt happened in a lot of my classes). part of college some times

I don’t have anything due day 1, but I do have access to the intro assignments for my upper-level math courses. I’m avoiding looking at them until classes actually start.

Well technically I’ve had homework all summer, since I’m a music major. I’m a performance major, and my teacher specifically told me what pieces I was to be working on and which ones were supposed to be all memorized and learned pretty much before I get to school. I learned and memorized my concerto, a Chopin scherzo, and one movement of a Mozart sonata. I’m working on the other 2 movements of Mozart and the other pieces. It’s supposed to be all technically learned and stuff so that he doesn’t have to do any of that really, and just work on the musical problems in it, and assign me more music when school starts next week.

@nerdasaurus: Are you on the semester or quarter system? I still have a month left until I begin classes at Cal Poly Pomona.

I found an old syllabus for one of my math classes I have this semester, so I’m probably just going to do all of the homework before class even starts for my upper-divison course. I already have the book. I’ve done a lot for all my courses this semester before it’s even started.

@CalDud: I’m on the semester system (CSU Fullerton).

None this semester, thankfully. I’ve had classes in the past that had reading or short assignments due on the first day, though.

That actually makes sense. I had a few seminars in the social sciences where the professor only handed out a syllabus on the first day and then dismissed the class. I was always wondering why we didn’t just have a reading assignment due on the first day so that we could actually utilize that time.

Don’t think I’ve ever had anything due the first day of classes. Although I guess it’s possible, since they could always email us, but who ever checks that until school starts again?
First day is usually for introductions, syllabus and maybe our first assignment.

Today was my first day of classes, but my English professor sent out an email last week asking us to read 2 chapters of our first book. My English class is Tuesday/Thursday so it’s to be done by tommorow. I also got a ton of homework today in both of my upper level Biology courses.

I’ve never had homework or assignments before classes started. Last semester, one of my bio professors sent out an email of “suggest reading” if we wanted to get an early jump on things, but that was it. I have, however, been checking Blackboard like a madwoman just in case.

When they send out the syllabus early, i tend to flip through the book a bit.
