I've finally come to the conclusion that a lot of what we do in school is nonsense. Actually, i came to the conclusion in middle school but wth. I know wikipedia isn't the most reliable source in the world to say the least, but what you read on the internet, magazines, etc seems to me to be far mor applicable in real life.

Your not paying attention in class enough or your school is bad. It is true wikipedia is a good source for general knowledge, but you can’t learn detailed info in some cases from anywhere but school. When it comes to learning info needed for a profession, which is what is most applicable to life, school will be your number one source of knowledge. Why else would millions of students pay thousands of dollars to pay tuition?

I actually find that Wikipedia is an awful way to learn anything.

Well, Wikipedia is for those quick searches when somebody mentions something and you don’t know what it is.

I find that, since I’m homeschooled, I actually LEARN the subject way more in depth, than just taking the subject at a school.

wiki is best used as a basis for information, imo.

Wikipedia is the only reason I get so many Jeopardy questions right lol. But textbooks and education materials are far more credible. Wikipedia is more likely to have mistakes.

there are a lot of problems with the current educational system. teaching for testing is one of them. i think i’ve learned a lot more on my own than i have even in my college PSEO classes. i don’t really restrict myself to wikipedia or anything though because there are just so many resources in our day and age. OP, you might want to look up unschooling which is sort of related to homeschooling. it’s about allowing students to explore their own interests and not teaching through a curriculum, but rather ‘guiding’ kids and encouraging their natural curiosity. i feel like i’ve done a lot of that myself.

the sad thing is the only reason i passed my spanish final last year (i kind of suck at espa

Yes. Because I actually learn things that I am interested in, and therefore I retain it because I want to. I just don’t memorize at 2 AM to get an A.

They key to success in High School is knowing how to BS.
Or at least for my school.

Wikipedia is a great source of information, but it’s such an awful way to learn material. Hell, they make addition complicated with weird-ass notations and symbols.

It probably doesn’t help that the most important thing you learn in high school is the ability to function as a member of society.

just buy textbooks used in schools, read them thoroughly, take notes, and you’ve gained almost the same amount of knowledge as you would have sitting in a high school classroom. The only difference is the amount of self discipline you have to make it work.

wikipedia is good for random, general knowledge

You must have some crappy teachers then.

True, I’ve gained more knowledge outside my school than in my school, but I have developed my personality and practical approach more in school than outside.

Wikipedia is excellent for learning about specific (where else can you find comprehensive information about [Grope**** Lane](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grope****_Lane), a [list of English Words containing Q not followed by U](List of English words containing Q not followed by U - Wikipedia), [the infinite monkey theorem](Infinite monkey theorem - Wikipedia), a [list of snow events in Florida](Snow in Florida - Wikipedia), [red rain in Kerala](Red rain in Kerala - Wikipedia), [url=Andrée's Arctic balloon expedition - Wikipedia]S.
When you just scan a source like Wikipedia for a quick and dirty answer, you’re not giving your brain time to fully immerse itself into the topic.

I learn by reading Cracked and then Wikipedia-ing the details I don’t know.

“quick and dirty answer”

Not a very nice way of putting it
