Who else got punk'd by the UT admission? - UPDATE

gec414
Then write them a letter explaining why you chose UT over Chapman and attach all your film materials.
Good luck!

I got in for RTF. I had all that generic stuff in my resume, which is great for the college, but I also had a lot of info on what I’ve done with film. I listed every film in order of when I did it, the running time, if it was in a festival, and gave a link for each. I also wrote a little bit about myself and how I write, act, direct, and edit my films. I definitely think that helped.

Thanks Ya Ya! :)

@filmdirector - Yeah that sounds like the best bet. Sounds like you are well qualified on the film aspect - are you in state or out of state? What are your stats?

@gec414

I’m out of state.

SAT: 1950 (640 math, 690 Writing, 620 CR)
GPA: 3.8
Run cross country and track
participate in a lot of activities

I also described some of the things I did in detail so they would really understand what I did. Like most people would just ignore cross country, but I made it clear that running cross country helped me a lot to become a strong film director. I also had all the info for my films with links. And I had really good essays that read like fun stories.

You guys should seriously consider accepting the CAP offer. General Ed classes are going to be basically the same regardless of where you take them and you will be at UT Austin before you know it! One year in San Antonio or Dallas etc. is not going to kill you!

@sketchedout - I would consider…BUT I’m not automatically admitted into RTF and I would be a technical junior after my hours doing CAP, considering I was planning on entering as a sophomore (credit wise) as it is.

gec414

RTF is not an easy major. Taking into consideration that Texas is not union but “right-to-work” state and that in this business you get job depending on who you know UT Austin is the only normal option in the whole state. Going to any other “film” program in Texas is a road to nowhere.
You have to consider CAP or any film school in LA. Everything else is a waste of time and money, especially money.

By the way, do you know that UCLA’s film program is 2 years only? And even CalStates with reputable film programs will accept you for pre-film only since it is officially an impacted major with a lot of restrictions? A lot of people in California start in community colleges and transfer to UCLA, Chapman, USC etc junior year. It saves a lot of money. :-)

I was 5 slots from being an automatic admit at UT and I was also CAP’ed which is a bummer. In the end though, believe it or not, I was more relieved than anything because I felt that I wouldn’t have been happy at UT (noise, cars, traffic, etc) so I believe that I will be enrolling at A&M (which I have been already been accepted to) and both schools offer academic promise. I’m going to be majoring in Biology… I want to be a doctor  SO if you get CAP’ed, don’t sweat it! There are so many great schools out there that will be glad to have you

A&M is as or even noisier than UT. College Station is party town USA!

UT is a party school overall…A&M is a party school as well but it’s much easier to get away from all that.

@Ya Ya - I didn’t say RTF was an easy major? I’m very well aware that film is a difficult practice - I’ve been very involved with it for the past 5 or so years of my life.

I’m not planning on going to any other film school in Texas - right now it’s either UT (if my appeal is accepted) or Chapman. I was just stating that the CAP program isn’t desirable for me, considering I already have a lot of hours and would want to spend as much time networking at UT as possible. Austin is a wonderful city for film and I want to be there as soon, and long, as possible.

And yes, I did know that about UCLA. The thing I love about Chapman is that you actually start working on your first day of class, and most students are working on sets/have internships by their sophomore year. Although going to UT for undergrad and then Chapman for grad is still ideal since I’d love to save that big wad of money. :)

@gec414
I don’t know how this will make you feel, but I applied to UT got in and got into the RTF major.

Stats:
SAT:1500
ACT: 23
Initial HS Rank: 19 out of 281 ( top 10%) 15 out of 239 in senior re ranking
12 AP courses all four years. 8 Pre-AP all four years. Public high school offered 25 AP courses.
100+ community service hours, one of which included a music festival
No job
Member of NHS, Student Council, Key Club and Interact Club
Drill Team member
Captain of Fc Dallas Youth soccer team freshman year (discontinued after injury)
AVID member
Character Award, Panader of the Week Award
ESPN Radio intern for 4 years
Half-assed essays
Amazing letters of rec
First to graduate high school and pursue college education
In state

I was shocked I got in for RTF. I was certain I would be placed in Liberal Arts as a history major since that was my second choice. I don’t know much about editing. I have met students who know lots and feel rather intimidated. I am going to UT, but I want to know why I got in.

hjp1980

19 out of 281 is top 7% and automatic admit for AVID member/First to graduate high school and pursue college education. Automatic admit to any college.
Are you any minority by any chance?

You got into RTF because of music festival, ESPN Radio intern for 4 years, half-assed essays and amazing letters of rec (which are not required, by the way, but always help)

RTF is trying to accept people with some experience who understand how this industry works, not just some people who like to watch movies and believe that this industry is all about red carpet parties. Because UT doesn’t want these people to wait tables with $100,000 UT Bachelor degree.

gec414’s biggest mistake was that he did not mention his film experience in essays and EC/resume like it did not exist. And if he was accepted to Chapman it had to be really good experience and really good movies he made.
And gec414 was top 11%.

Oh hey just because of my pride I wanted to give everyone an update -

I graduated in top 7%.
& “IF” I got into Chapman? Ahem. I DID. ;)

And I was happily admitted into UT’s RTF program for the fall of 2012 after I appealed.

And Ya Ya - I did mention film experience in my essays and extra curriculars.

Phew glad that was all settled. Also if anyone is reading this who is worried about not getting into UT/RTF/having to appeal - do not think you’re not good enough. I was (clearly) barely admitted and I made a 4.0 my first semester. YOU CAN DO IT!
Hook 'em. \m/

Congratulations, gec!

Just a note - December 10 is an unusually early deadline. Not a particular fan.

Congrats, gec! I’m so glad your appeal was successful! Best of luck to you!

gec414
Congratulations!

P.S. And since I am an ESL person, what is wrong with IF?

I got CAP’d.
I live in Texas.

Made it to state for cross country as an individual this year (Texas is one of the hardest states)

Also 18 hours of community service

How did I not get in? Is it possibly because I’m not in the top 8%? I’m so angry right now.
