Who else is going to Pomona for architecture? I’m having a really hard time deciding on schools, I’d just like to know why you choose Pomona, if you don’t mind sharing!

I am. I chose Pomona because is one of the top architecture programs in the nation and its

-Close to LA studios.

-Best in Sustainable Design
[Schools that Excel in Sustainable Design - Education, Research - Architect Magazine](http://www.architectmagazine.com/education/sustainable.aspx)

-Highly selective
something like 7% admission rate

-Dirty cheap
$4,500/year!

Where else did you get in to? If you got into SLO, there are other threads that have dealt with this choice.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/cal-poly-san-luis-obispo/878171-negative-things-about-slo-3.html?highlight=cal+poly+pomona+architecture

If it’s USC, I would say they’re both about the same but at much different prices. When I went to CPP, some professors, many of whom also taught at USC, mentioned all the kids that tried getting into Pomona for the cheaper tuition but didn’t get in. The faculty at Pomona is pretty LA centric, so they’ll teach the same design philosophy as USC. Studios at Pomona should still be under 20 and are for 9 hours a week, so even for the price, you should get plenty of face time with your instructors. USC, if you can afford it, is a way better overall university, but if you’re set on architecture they’re both about the same…Just curious, what was your GPA and SAT?

By the way, Cal Poly will start requiring all freshmen to live in the dorms and they just finished some pretty sweet dorms with 600 more bed for next year. The basketball team just won the Div 2 championship, so school spirit should be on the way up next year.

Weighted GPA: 4.1
SAT: 1320/2020

There are only 5 universities that have the major in California: Berkeley, UCLA, USC, CP-SLO and CP-Pomona. (There are a couple others that are for-profit but are a complete joke). All are highly regarded and admissions to any of the 5 is absurdly selective. Your decision should be mostly based on how much do you want to spend among other factor (BTW I also got into CP-SLO). If I had gotten into Cornell I would have sold my kidney to go there though :)

My SATs are the same as yours, also 1320/2020, and my GPA is 4.0 weighted.

Right now Im seriously considering Cal Poly Pomona, the only thing that keeps me from fully deciding to go here is that it is a mostly a commuter school, Im not from the southern california area, and I would just like to go to a school with a more varied student body.

Yeah, money is definitely a factor, if I did go to USC without scholarships (Im not getting any financial aid) it would cost me a little over $250,000 for my BArch degree. The number is a little terrifying!

At an architect’s salary, that would take you a lifetime to pay off. I am a practicing architect, and a lot of my colleagues are in the same place in our careers, but they’re still paying off their private education while I am traveling the world and learning more than I would have from an Ivy league. Overall, USC is a better university and if you get scholarships go there, but Pomona architecture has more well rounded students and professors than the university as a whole. Have you looked into the IGE (inter-disciplinary general education) courses. This is a liberal arts program that offsets the techie mentality that comes with being in an engineering focused university.

250K is way too much! It’s not like they come out and get a higher salary just because they went to USC. Absolutely nothing justifies the cost, not even the legendary football team. Hey, with that money you could buy a luxury box (if the Colosseum had any!)
