I want to know what kind of competition I have :p. Please do tell whether you've applied for aid or not, and whether your international like me.
Also, any tips/advice for getting off the waiting list will be more dan welcome!! :D

Does anyone know if they see financial aid info when they're looking at the waitlist?

I'm sure they do look at how much we would cost...especially this year when they can't afford to go over budget....

I think the more pressing question is, will there be any money left?

does anyone know if Midd practices "courtesy waitlisting"? there seems to be a ton of intls on here who need a huge amount of aid that ended up getting waitlisted....so was this a nice way of saying "you're great, but no way can we afford you" or do they actually think they'll have some money left? most likely a combination of both? I don't know...I guess none of us can say with the economy right now, even the people who made the decisions

I'm definitely taking a shot at getting off the waitlist, but I hope that the waitlistees really do have a chance (even though a very slim one), because if it really is ONLY a courtesy then it is just cruel

Even if there's a 1% chance, i'm ready to take it. Everyone's saying that even for the schools that are need blind, the waiting lists aint. so the chance of gettin off the waitlist for an applicant who applied for aid, and is international too, on top of that, is very very slim :(
4 school waitlisted me and i'm positive it has something to do with aid.

I believe (although I am not certain in every case) that taking students off the waitlist is not a need-blind process. I think it may be one piece of the same complex puzzle and I also believe it has something to do with who is not taking them up on their offer of admission.

^ Does getting off the waitlist have something do with nationality?? Like if for example, a Pakistani denies an offer of admission, is there any chance that they'll choose a Pakistani asking for the same aid from the waiting list?
Thanks!! (:

Sorry. Perhaps there is someone with an answer? But i imagine only adcoms know this. As it has been this year, nothing is as usual and international applicants seem to be bearing the brunt of an unfortunate economy. However, they do like to keep their numbers of internationals. I just would venture to guess that aid will be, unfortunately, be a factor. How big of one, I wouldnt venture to guess.

I had my high school counselor speak with a Midd admissions counselor, and apparently the waitlist is huge this year. Apparently they don't expect many to get off of it, my counselor said to expect 10 or less to make it off.

on the other hand, I don't see how they can possibly know that this soon....the economy is making this whole ordeal extremely unpredictable, both for us and for them....

after being extremely unfamiliar with this whole crazy admissions process (in Canada, you just send in your marks)...this whole thing seems like a crapshoot to me, and I've never been particularly lucky....but I work really hard at least!!!
huge downside to the Canadian system: no comparable schools with an elite liberal arts curriculum...as with most things, I think there could be a nice balance between the extremes of the Canada and the US......

but anyways, I'm gonna stick it out for now, things always change so fast....last year almost everyone took more people off the waitlist than they thought, didn't they?

I think I read on this forum that Middlebury filled 45% of their freshman seats during early decision. That probably helps them figure out if they'll be going to their waitlist.

Yeah well im ready to fight and work hard for it..i want this place!! :D

I was waitlisted too. I talked to an admissions counselor and she said that they don't know yet if they'll be using the waitlist. She mentioned that last year they used it, but the year before not a single person got in from the waitlist. She also said that IF they go to the waitlist, everyone gets a second chance. There is no set rank of the order they'll start accepting kids. It depends on things like majors/demographics, things like that. She also said that they are NOT need-blind (I think someone already mentioned this). So, people who can afford it definitely have the upper hand. The sad thing is that none of this may matter - they may not take anyone :(

^Thanks for the info!! :D
Yeah and I guess the chances of int'ls applying for aid=zilch=0 :( :p

but still there must be some chance, or why would they have put us on the waitlist....that goes back to my concern about "courtesy" waitlisting though :S

I'd be surprised if Middlebury hasn't done an initial ranking of its waitlist applicants. It's not in Middlebury's interests to say that it does so.

My son was waitlisted at Princeton last year and I know that Princeton had its waitlist applicants ranked. Kids were getting in off the waitlist the day after the decision deadline.

I'd guess that with a lot of schools, trying to "pull strings," etc. to get off waitlists is a waste of time and effort. At least that was my son's experience.

I was waitlisted four times this year, too, free! Not exactly the most fun thing ever…

I’ve decided to take all of the spots on the waitlists (Midd, Bowdoin, Swat, and Williams) just to keep the possibility open, even though I know that the chances of getting off are approaching zero…I did apply for financial aid, but my family in actuality deserves very little, according to the EFC.

Since it’s pretty clear to me that Midd won’t work out for me at this point, I’m trying to move on and get excited about the schools I did get into (hooray Wellesley!). Good luck with everything, just your waitlist at Middlebury tells me that you’ve got to have several other good options for college! :)

^Yeah I knoww!! Annoying isn’t it!! I’ve decided to stay on the waiting lists too. Hoping for the best!!
I got into Colgate wid full aid…so i guess thats on for me :)

I’ve also been waitlisted in four places (Amherst, Carleton, Dartmouth and Middlebury). I’m taking all spots as well. However, being international and needing lots of aid puts me in a bad situation.

I got off Dartmouth’s!! So there’s one more free spot at Amherst, Carleton and Middlebury.

How is there one more free spot at all three schools? Did you send deposits to all three?
