Now that I have appointments to both USNA and USMA I can't decide which one. Does anyone else have appointments to both and trying to decide? I'm more familiar with West Point since I was there last summer and I've read a lot of books about it. I was also accepted to Harvard EA but have decided to go to an Academy instead.

That is a tough decision to make however it is a bind that most people would love to be in. I can see the agony of your decision. If I were you I would ask myself what I want to do in the military as an officer and then move from there. A good way to answer your question would be to analyze what you will be doing during your first summer. At West Point, you will be out in the woods doing infantry related exercises whereas at USNA you will be learning about sailing and things of that nature. Which of these appeals to yopu more than the other? Also, if you are leaning towards the sciences/engineering majors it is probably in your best interest to go Navy because of your opportunities in the fleet. Another great thing about West Point however, is the history and that is one of the main reasons why I am going there as a history major. Anyways, it is a tough decision but make sure you look beyond the school itself and how you want to serve your country after graduation and that should help. Good luck.

hmmm not quite in the position but a little similiary, I have an appointment to USCGA and to USMA prep school, I'm having a pretty tough time deciding too

Daughter had to make a similar choice between appts to West Point and the Naval Academy. It has to come down to what do you want to do AFTER you graduate more than what school you want to go to. Look at the career paths for both and use that to decide. Deciding just based on the school is probably a mistake. Good Luck.

I agree with Shogun and adam, carefully examine career opportunities after graduation. Sorry, I don't know too much about Army options, but Navy offers surface warfare, submarine, nuclear propulsion, aviation, Marine Corps, and Special Ops. This may sound strange, but my daughter also wants to be on or near the ocean because that's what she is used to. Then there are those like our friend a retired Navy captain (submariner) from Wyoming who had never seen the ocean until he arrived at USNA!

Stev, I got one from Army, Navy, and Air Force. I loved the USNA when I went over the summer, but when I looked at what I wanted to do in the long range, the Army fit me much better. I really want to roll in the mud and run around in the woods... :)

I mailed in my acceptance card to West Point. AHHHHHHH, feels pretty good. See all of you real soon.

Stev,

Congratulations!!

I wonder if you can share your decision making process. You had some excellent choices and I'll bet that some others who are still trying to decide will benefit from hearing your story.

Thank you.

Thank you! Aside from trying to make the decision on which academy to attend, I was also overwhelmed with a Harvard acceptance made even more attractive with a ROTC scholarship. I had to look at what career interests I have and where I would be most comfortable. In making my decision, I also contacted others on this site who are in the same situation. One in particular gave me some very sound pieces of advice and for that I am truly grateful. I suppose I just needed to step back for a while and give my mind a rest. This is probably one of the most difficult decisions I have had to make in my life so far, so I wanted to feel good about it. Everything about West Point gets me excited. I have read loads of books on it and loved being there last summer. And, once I made up my mind that I want to major in History, the decision became clear that West Point is where I want to be.

Stev - I am glad that you made the right choice and I look forward to seeing you this summer at Beast. I can't think of a better place in the country for us to be history majors. It will certainly be a great experience.

Hey adam,
I'm looking forward to it. See you at Beast!

beware history majors of the boredom that you may undergo....(lol im sorta playing, but my brother is a firstie)....i hope you all are in love with military history because that is almost all that you will be studying

Well, I had started applications at both, and after going to NASS and IAW last year, my decision was made right then and there for West Point. I dunno, USNA just wasn't for me.
