Who else turned Harvard down?

physicshobo - you picked Princeton for exactly the right reasons. I tell kids who want that extroverted life, which the music of a city life intensifies, to go to Harvard over Princeton. And I’m one of the biggest Princeton supporters ever. Congrats on a very intelligent decision and I hope you have the time of your life. See you at Reunions:). And graduation:).

I turned Harvard down for the Cornelius Vanderbilt scholarship today. True, Harvard may open more “doors” in various fields, but for the field I want to enter (music business), Vanderbilt is the most logical choice, considering its location and the connections I have already made as a high school student (working at Ardent, etc…). Plus, with name and prestige aside, I just really didn’t like the Harvard undergraduate college at all. I definitely know types of kids who would fit in well there, but for me, I felt as if I needed a better academic/social environment to reach my potential. A very small part of me regrets turning down the “number one” institution, but overall, I believe I have made the right choice. And plus, there’s always graduate school to shoot for.

Yay! I turned Harvard down! Sorry :). Harvard’s great, but since I felt like I was being forced to go there, I’m very happy about saying no. Otherwise, I’d probably be sad about the awesomeness that is Widener.

Physicshobo: Yes, my parents wanted me to go for financial reasons. My FB status currently announces that I will soon be in massive debt. And my father is irate.

Dear Millancad–Where have you decided to go? I’m glad you’re happy. All good luck to you.

I picked MIT, which, in combination with laziness, is why I haven’t bothered to change my future location.

I hope all of you guys who said yes have lots of fun at Harvard!

I was very close to turning Harvard down for Yale, and I still feel the utmost respect and love for Yale.

It was definitely a difficult decision, NOT as obvious or as straightforward as it would seem to many people, and my decision could really have gone either way. In the end it was Harvard, but only by the slimmest of margins.

What I want to say basically is:

*There is no right decision or wrong decision, there is only the decision that is right FOR YOU. And as long as you choose based on values and points that are meaningful to you, then its a decision that has conviction, and is one that you own. *

(I didn’t choose Harvard for prestige - I was one of the ppl MOST turned off by what I saw as the arrogance of the H-bomb, objective “awesomeness of faculty” or “massiveness of resources” didn’t really factor either.)

I steered away from the more obvious reasons, and found things in Harvard that spoke to me personally. I chose Harvard in the end and I feel that was the right thing for me, but for many others, that might well NOT be the right choice for them, and I have full and total admiration for it. :)

Everyone, be happy! Have conviction! Life will be great.

theskylitup: That’s exactly how I feel! Except substituting Princeton for Harvard and Harvard for Yale. Both are such great places, and I wish I could somehow have accepted both. I still feel a little sad when I see the “Harvard College - Will Not be Coming” email in my inbox… but it’s more then compensated for when I see “Princeton '14” on my Facebook profile! =D

I agree so much physicshobo!

I felt SOOO sad - not sad to be accepting Harvard, but very sad to be turning down an amazing school like Yale. You form so many emotional ties, especially when you visit, and it’s very difficult to turn down a school that has been so good to you.

I definitely also wished I could have accepted both - and I’m still a little wistful. But in the end, I have no regerts and there’s such a sense of “right” inside, that really tells me I made the right choice for myself.

(PS. I visited Princeton, and can very much see you there and I totally understand all the reasons you mentioned! It is such a lovely campus, but more than that it feels like a little village community - definitely very peaceful and cozy. As I said to someone else, Princeton is like the Garden of Eden. You will do amazingly, and thrive there, I can tell.)
