Who exactly are we competing with?

Technically, are you only competing exclusively with the kids in your geographical area? For ex, since I'm from the South- I only need to worry about kids (like chumboy ;-))from Lousiana, Arkansas, Alabama, and the likes and so Contessa's or Jaug's stats dont directly affect me. Is that how it works? where they have a set quota/admit % for each region and thats what they use as the parameter?

Technically...they never admit to quotas...no college ever will. But yes, I believe that you are [MOST of the time] only competing with kids from your own area. But that might not hold true in Columbia's case, where applicants from the same area (i.e. State) will both be considered for adimission...rare though for ones from the same city, states is a bit too much....but rarely do they have the same people from the same city, unless it's NYC.

If they rarely have people from the same city, does that mean then that they rarely have two people from the same school? Not an issue over here as I'm the only one for miles applying to Columbia, except for Glory in Houston. lol but just a point of clarification.

How many people do we predict will come from Texas to Columbia? btw

i think you're only compared to regional applicants for most of the admissions process, but when it comes down to the final decision, you are compared to all applicants from everywhere. that's how they "mold" their perfect class.

LOL Contessa...you remind me of the young me...I wish I was still idealistic =(

Anyways...It Is pratically IMPOSSIBLE & NO WAY IN HELL Can Two Kids from the same school gets into a school like Columbia...If you know someone that did...please enlighten me and tell me.

But then again...just my 2 cents...some people will nerve admit

I'm applying to the College and a classmate of mine is applying to SEAS. Do you think they differentiate when the 2 kids are applying to two different schools?

There are both private and public schools here (Philadelphia suburbs) that send multiple students to Columbia each year.

Whew...........thanks for the info Elleneast..........

First,
Dead wrong on the regional thing. This becomes a factor only for states like wyoming from which they may only have "10 students" applying (in which case they may look to accept at least one in order to conserve geographical diversity). Other than that, you are competing against everyone in the country for a slot. The geographical breakup (an admissions officer for each specific area) is simply done for administrative reasons.
Any geographical determinations that might be made are done after the AdCom gets to that coveted final pile...once all the students have been ordered by scores GPA essay and EC's (all together)...
And yes there are PLENTY of schools who send more than one person to Columbia. Andover, choate, Thomas Jefferson HS, Miami, Horace Mann, Collegiate, Georgetown Prep, Friends' School, those are just a few off the top of my head...

Haha...never gonna question ivyman1 =).

But I do have a question....in order to diversify a college's students...aren't admission really concerned about people from the same high school? Since people from the same high school usually are in some ways alike??

heh...still I stand true to my beliefs...I'm pretty stubborn =)

Not really, my HS of 100 had 3 accepts...not true at all

WHAT??!! 100 students and 3 Got into Columbia! What kind of high school do you go to? Really competitive?

In my school 8 kids are going to Columbia so i have no idea what you are thinking delfire. More than two kids from the same high school can defintley get into columbia.

WOW

I'm "enlightened" could this be the wavering of my beliefs? Haha...It's good to know...Thanks a lot guys.

Yeah, it's definately not true about the same high school. My school sent two people this year out of a class of 90. And there are plenty of people from other schools as well. And plenty of people from my area get in. I don't think the regions or schools have anything to do it and it's just how competitive you are in general.

OK...Hmm...I just though about it..let me rephrase it:

Instead of saying "no chance in hell"...would it be partially correct to say that students from the same school applying to the same PRESTIGIOUS colleges are at a disadvantage?

Oh and ivyman1, those high schoolls you listed are among the BEST in the country...AND I was talking about your average public high schools whom no one ever heard of...

Oh god i love thomas jefferson high school. =)

Orginal poster, I'm curious...where are you from and what high school?

Thats nothing, lol... My school had less than 80 seniors last year, and 7 (maybe 6 at the least) were accepted to Columbia... 4 are going...

UGH- My school has 550 in the graduating class and I don't think anyone's gotten in.

My Hs is kind of crazy though, we also had 11 National merit semi-finalists...
