Who finds out about your college acceptances?

When decisions come out, is the student the only one that is notified about whether he is accepted or rejected? Or do high school guidance counselors and teachers get notified/find out too?

It may depend on the school. I know that when I got into college ED, all the teachers and guidance counselors had been notified. I couldn’t say if that happens with rejections too, though.

Definitely not the case a most schools; typically no one would know but you.

@philpsych How did they find out? Why would they have been informed? Certainly seems like a privacy issue to me, and I can’t imagine that they “all had been notified.” At some schools the GC may have a relationship with certain college admissions officers and perhaps yours was told confidentially but chose to spread the news far and wide?

Once you choose a school, you need your HS to send in a final transcript. In that sense, they’ll know which one you’re eventually attending. But as far as other notification? Like the others have said – only in circumstances where the GCs have special relationships w/the colleges in question.

@planner03 It may be because of the size of my school–25 kids per grade, 2 counselors, and maybe 9-10 teachers.

It all depends. It isn’t standard practice, so if you go to a public in a non-pricy part of the country they may never know. If you go to a private or public where the counselors make a point of getting to know adcoms at selective colleges, the GC may get a courtesy email/call.

I remember my GC would know when I updated Naviance with my acceptances. It depends on the school.

At many schools the GC does the Naviance update. But they ask that all students provide the information. Sometimes GCs know because they have talked to admissions at a given school about your application.

My kids let their guidance counselors know where they got in and the GC updated the Naviance system.
