Who gets into Ivies anymore????

I've been wanting to hear from other kids about kids they know (or themselves) who have been accepted into an Ivy. Cuz, well at my school, things really sucked this year. I really want to know what Ivies are looking for. From what I see, amazing academics don't cut it anymore...

Well there's these two kids at my school that are totally great people, geniuses, and they work really hard.

One has like a 1570, 800 math2c, 800chem, 800writing, 5's on apush,5 calc ab/bc, physics C, a 4 on ap spanish (which is amazing for a russian), 5 english, 5 ap chem, and 5's on whatever else the person took. She's highyl involved in MAO and math comps, placely many times at district level, state, national. she's recieced a state scholar award, wins all the excellence awards in each subject at our school's awards ceremony.

The other is quite similar. They applied early to Yale and Harvard. They were defered and then rejected. Wash U even deferred them (apparenty cuz they were too good) and one was waitlisted on reg decision from UPENN (WHARTON) with both parents who went there!! The girl is probably going to a state school.

I feel so bad for them. They've worked so freaking incredibly hard, and they get rejected everywhere. It's depresssing.

WHat do you guys think, and what stories or insight do you have?

oh man that really blows

to get into an Ivy you need to start a corporation // non-profit or find some scientific breakthrough or have a world champion sport belt.

dang, that just got me depressed. It just goes to show how much of a crapshoot college admissions at Ivies are nowadays

I'm so sick of college admissions, I don't know how there are so many geniuses/heads of corporations at the age of 17 in this country, because I have yet to meet one, but there must be some people who get into these schools. The whole process is so dehumanizing.

This wasn't a good post to read when I was just thinking to myself about how tired I am of trying to be perfect all the time, which led me to abandon my homework to go on CC.

you have issues

You don't realize the understatement nor the sarcasm in my post?

:P

I am laughing so hard cause it's so funny. Chill, bro. ;)

One thing I like about this forum is how cool people are when you make a mistake. :D

Its a crapshoot, essentially since there are so many qualified people they probably have to choose randomly, just because there are soo many good applicants.

Maybe their essays weren't hot or they didn't sound interesting. Everyone applying to these Ivies have great scores so you may as well look away from factors like those and look at the rest.

As I have said often on the boards, my brother had a 1600 on his SAT, valedictorian, drum major of his band, head of a community service organization and was rejected from Harvard, Yale, deferred/waitlisted from MIT. He received full scholarships but wasn't accepted to the joint medical schools at Rochester or NYU. He was also accepted at Cornell. He decided to enroll at NYU but had just the right attitude. He knew that he didn't get any dumber because he was rejected and now has a 3.983 GPA at NYU (one A- in two years), has a research assisantship in a chemistry lab (a spot usually reserved for a graduate student) and has won several awards in his major field.

So it looks as if his life won't be ruined or even worse because he didn't go to Harvard, Yale, or MIT.

Jon

i need to do something weird. i have good stats, but im afraid of getting rejected at these kind of schools.

this kid in my school got into CORNELL.(surprisingly) He had like a 3.5 gpa. Number 117 in the school. Nothing really special about him. No community service. the only thing he did have was a rowing rank, which he is pretty good in. sats in the 1300s. Not so good aps. I COULD NOT BELIEVE THAT HE GOT IN. Even some exceptional students in my school withhe stats a thousand times better than him didn't get in. that just blows my mind.

Oh yeah. People who are good at rowing automatically get into IVYs cause its a big thing for them.

what about being a good student? i always thought that was more important than rowing.

rowing is the best, what are u talking about. What ivies really need are more guys with big biceps and good navigational skills in water. forget the brain, power to the biceps!

You have no idea how much rowing can boost chances at IVYs. All 8 members of our school's varsity 8 boat was accepted to Princeton like even before ED. Some went elsewhere though. One guy who went to princeton had like a 3.5

lol this cracks me up. It's like they're secretly building a Viking ship and need smart, strong rowers to manuver the ship...Preppies rowers are so funny

Stop worrying, if you get it, in was meant to be. Why waste your whole life trying to get into a certain college. You should not plan what you do around college applications. If you have to do so much extra stuff to get into a certain college, should you really be going there and will you even enjoy it?

Hahahahaha, I'm sorry everyone, I had just woken up from a nap after screwing myself on a history unit test and dealing with some personal problems, and I was feeling a little vulnerable (as you might have noticed). After reading my post just now, I realize how stupid I sounded. I usually pay better attention to internet sarcasm...
