Who gives a ***** about ivies? school suggestions

<p>So ill try and make this as short as possible.. basically I am a sophomore who already attempted to transfer as a freshman and is now looking to try again. I would appreciate any school suggestions as I am trying to find just one reach school and one safety to apply to this time.</p>

<p>My first transfer attempt I was rejected from UChicago, Penn, Cornell, and Carnegie Mellon, but I applied as an Econ/business major and that is not at all what I want to do (its also a pretty hard major to transfer into). My apps were also done last minute and my essays sounded way too elitest.</p>

<p>Now I have decided on a major and am interested in cognitive and computational neuroscience and am looking for top undergrad schools in this area (i plan to pursue a PhD). I dont give a crap about ivies or prestige but im certainly open to any good program.</p>

<p>My stats are pretty good with one exception, an F my 2nd semester fresh year in a honors topical course (I didnt finish a paper that was necessary to pass because i was stressed out about transfer stuff) I am currently retaking a course that will replace that grade (although a different topic) and have an A. my other stats are as follows:</p>

<p>High School
GPA: ~3.35 UW, ~3.65 W
ACT: 34 (not superscore)</p>

<p>Internship with a lawyer summer after graduation, turned into a paid position as a paralegal.</p>

<p>College:
GPA (with F replaced): 3.97
79 credit hours
public university, in honors program with 16 honors credit hours</p>

<p>ECs:
president and founder of a chinese club
honors council committee
SGA committee
a few international programs
honors current events discussion group
3 honors societies</p>

<p>Other:
studied abroad in China summer of fresh year for 10 credit hours in chinese
conversant in chinese
amazing rec letter from lawyer i worked for
tutor underprivileged elementary school kids 3 hours a week
50+ community service hours (not including above)</p>

<p>Negatives:
NO research experience
curriculum so far has been very diverse and liberal artsy, not a strong science focus, but next semester will be all science/math courses (although i have taken through calc 2)
F still appears on transcript even though not in GPA</p>

<p>SO, any suggestions on schools strong in cognitive neuroscience/mathematics that seem to be a fit for me? Both reach schools and safeties. Any input would be greatly appreciated. thanks.</p>

<p>So . . what I see is a student who believes that selecting a great major is a key to academic focus, who did not have the maturity to finish their assigned class assignments because he was worried about about the future, who believes that not being accepted at elite schools was only due to a lack of focus on doing complete work . . . then you trash those schools? </p>

<p>My comments? Slow down. Choosing THE major is important only for people who already know what they want to do, and you appear to be all over the intellectual map. The risk is that even non HyP-type colleges you want to transfer to may also see that in you, too.</p>

<p>I suggest you go through the same college “fit” process that would-be frosh do and get back to us with what KIND of college atmosphere do you want. Academically, do you want to be in the top 10 % of the school or the middle 50%? Strong core curriculum or not? That will readily accept your credits or that will force you to go back and do some (what might be to you) remedial work?</p>

<p>Why do you want to transfer? Is it because your school doesn’t have good neuroscience or econ? </p>

<p>On the other hand, if all you want is a list of schools with good neuroscience programs . . .

<p>chill out people. ivies are great schools im just joking around to get some intelligent people to check out my thread ha. im just saying ivies are not the only good schools and prestige hunting is generally not the best way to choose a school. this is agreed upon by ANYONE knowledgable about colleges and anyone on CC who is worth listening to. i am even looking to go to schools of ivy caliber and even an ivy im just trying to say that the program is more important than the prestige of the school. </p>

<p>and you ms./mr. kei are making some outlandish assumptions. i am certainly not trashing any schools nor am i claiming not to have been accepted for any specific reason. and my school actually does not have a neuroscience program. i am also looking for a more intellectual environment and research opportunities. i also really like open curriculums so brown is in consideration as is amherst seeing as how both of those have strong neuro programs. any other thoughts and safety suggestions? </p>

<p>PS Ivies are awesome, sorry for offending. if i had only put “applying to yale” in my title maybe id get more responses…</p>

<p>ive already got a list of schools that im looking at but i want some input because im sure there are programs im missing. plus i dont have any safety schools in mind yet.</p>
