i got accepted, but in hindsight i guess i could have tried to express my love for quantitaive reasoning in science and math and whatnot a little better. plus, i could have done some research of invented something. the closest thing i did was build plans for a medical clinic in Bangladesh.

That’s a little unclear, so you DIDN’T get accepted? If so, sorry, at least you got into JHU! I was accepted to BME (woohoo!), and I didn’t do anything close to designing plans for a medical clinic. That sounds really interesting by the way.

The only thing I mentioned was my attempt at building a Van der Graaf generator in my kitchen. Other than that failure though I haven’t really done much engineering or research.

Orkiman, I’m a Hopkins BME alum who strongly debated between Caltech and Hopkins (though not the UCSD program). I really really think that your son needs to visit both campuses and stay overnight. Caltech runs some sort of campus preview weekend, and Hopkins hosts a limited number of admitted students overnight before the Admitted Student Days (so sign up quick). Both campuses have a very different culture and atmosphere, I really think that when you’re picking between those two schools, the student environment should be a really important factor. Feel free to reply or message me if you have any questions.

Tanman, Thanks for your info. I’ll message you if I have more questions. My S is a kind of nerdy kid. He visited Caltech and seemed to liked it so far (many nerdy type of students there too) :-). Maybe he should also visit JHU so he can compare.

i don’t know if i’m imagining it, but when i first opened the BME acceptance email on my ipod, it seemed to have the email addresses of everyone. its seems fixed now, but did anyone else notice that?

OP–you did everything the best you could and that’s all you can ask for. There are other students weeping who weren’t offered a spot. =] BME is NOT the only major here and if you do come here, you’ll find that =]
