I'm going to be attending Brevard Community College in the fall and most likely tranferring after receiving my A.A. As I know the University of Florida (at least) can be a little tougher to transfer into...is there one associate's vs. another that would make me more competitive to recieve admission for their History program? Also, who tends to have a stronger program between the two - University of Florida or Florida State University? Are there other schools in Florida that have a stronger History program than both of them?

The History program at UF is ranked within the Top-50.

So I was reading over Brevard's site...and it says I'm "guaranteed admission into one of Florida's 11 public universities unless it's a limited access program". I'm assuming History is definitely not. How do they determine which university I'm 'guaranteed acceptance' into...do I get to choose?

I doubt it. I think it just means you will get in one of them.

^ She is right. You are not guaranteed into UF

According to the articulation agreement between most Floriday colleges and the 11 public Universities you ARE guaranteed admittance to UF as long as it is not a limited access program. Google Florida 2+2.

^ That is flat out wrong. The 2 + 2 program guarantees admisssion into one of the 10 public universities in the SUS, and not necessarily UF. With the budget cuts as bad as they are watch and see how few transfers are admitted in the years to come.

CLAS, the college History is in, told me in the Spring that they were not admitting any transfers with lower than a 3.5.

As for UF vs. FSU, if you really want to work in the field of History, I'm guessing you'll probably have to go on to Grad School. In that case, UF's reputation will definitely help you get into a better school when it comes time to apply.

USF has some professor who discovered George Washington's childhood home. He takes a group of students up to Virginia to spend a month or so excavating the site every summer. If American History interests you, you might want to check that out. However, as a whole, I definitely do not recommend going to USF - trust me.

FSU is know for their Liberal Arts, but it just so happens that UF's history program is ranked better. I would strongly pick FSU's program over USF's if you are not admitted into UF.

try this site that has infor on graduate programs.
Graduate Program Profile — History, Florida State University — PhDs.org Graduate School Guide

You can plug in UF & FSU history programs.
I think this is one of those cases that you are ging to find little or no info on the undergraduate programs.

From that site from 2001 - 2005:

UF
3.1 "reasonably effective"
69 Masters degrees
24 Doctorates

FSU
2.5 "marginally effective"
73 Master degrees
41 Doctorates.

No one else in the state seemed to compare to these 2 schools.

By the way, it is interesting to note that the National Research Council (NRC) which ranks graduate schools last did it in 1995. On their link it says that new rankings come out in the fall of 2008.

Perhaps this is what UF has been waiting for to show an increased Peer Assesment?

This history program at UF is ranked 46th overall, and this is in spite of all the lousy Santa Fe kids who transfer in.

Thanks for all the info. guys...I'll definitely be looking at this. If UF's transfer #'s really are that low, I guess I'm just going to have to keep my grade's up! I know they look at high school transcripts & SAT's still for transfer students...do they also still take a 'whole appraisal' approach to the admissions process as they would w/ a freshman applicant? I'm a vet and would much rather my last 6 years of life experience speak for me as a person than grades I got 10 years ago.

Worst case scenario, it appears Brevard has a program w/ UCF for guaranteed admissions. Wherever I end up, I'll make the best of it.

The UF transfer app does not have a section for a personal essay. CALS did not ask my girlfriend for any supplemental material either, only test scores and transcripts. CLAS uses the same online app as CALS, but maybe they will ask you for supplementals, I don't know.
