I’m also trying to decide between State & UNC… I want to go to dental school at UNC, but I’m not sure which undergrad will be better

I can honestly say that in the six plus years that I have been on the UNC boards, this is the first time I’ve seen anyone, let alone several people struggling with a decision between UNC and NCSU unless major scholarships were being awarded at NCSU. Interesting…and a bit puzzling to say the least. They are SUCH different schools…

I think a lot of people stereotype UNC as being a really preppy place which scares some people off. In my opinion UNC has such a diverse student body with preppy kids, kids who would have been at home in the sixties, conservatives, liberals, ultra religious and atheists, straight, gay,and bi-sexual that it would be hard to truly categorize what a “typical” UNC student looks like. That, to me, is one of the real strengths of UNC…it is a place where anyone can find their niche and feel at home. UNC is a warm, friendly and very welcoming place where anyone can be who or what they want to be without fear of retribution or of “not fitting in.”

Many instate kids worry about repeating high school if they go to UNC because many kids from their school plan to go there. Let me tell you that it won’t happen unless you want it to. There are other current instate students that post here who will verify what I just said.

I will be the first to tell you that “fit” is a very important element for happiness and success as an undergrad. That said, I also find it hard to fathom that anyone would have a hard time finding a fit at UNC unless they want a REALLY small school.

I was an instate Morehead Semi, but did not progress, and did win significant scholarship monies to Vanderbilt, W&L, Univ of Miami & Southern Cali, so I will most probably be passing on UNC for one of these other schools, although I have not made my final decision and will wait until April 1st to hear from a couple stretch iveys.

My D has no strong interest in UNC but applied at our request. With IS tuition, we feel it makes the most financial sense. She would be able to graduate debt free with funds available to pursue graduate/medical school. She is accepted at UW-Madison, NYU, and FSU with UNC, Wake and reaches Stanford & Harvard still outstanding. Her top choices at this point are UW, Wake and NYU (not sure about lack of campus feel). I just believe an undergraduate from UNC is as strong as Wake without the excess $$$. For now, we wait for the decisions from the remaining schools.
