I'm just wondering what people consider low. :P Many of the people on CC should be proud of their scores, but they are so self-effacing about them. I find it silly, but it's understandable.

And what do you think made up for your "low" SAT scores? Your grades, ECs, awards, essay etc.? Go all out on details! Hopefully you guys will be an inspiration to those who think they are "short" in some aspects.

Based on Ivy League data, there are annually applicants who get in to the schools with 1750+ but these are people who truly have a story to tell or who have INCREDIBLE EC’s. I don’t find it hard to believe that someone with a 2000 SAT can get into say Harvard. It’s a holistic process, they look at EVERYTHING as a package.

I got a 2030 on SAT and 31, a 3.89 UW GPA (now a 3.93), I am a white first generation college student, and attend a “bad” public school. I am passionate about tutoring (500+ hours), have a really impressive transcript (with 33.5 credits including 7 AP, 7 independent studies, and 14 honors classes). My letters of recommendation are amazing and my essay was really good, too, I think. Be passionate about what you do, and aim for above a 2000 / 30 (though a 2200 / 33 is far more competitive). The process is holistic, and I am proof.

Lol what I meant with “low” is possibly lower 2000’s and below, not mid-range.

@jsungoh Haha, it’s not THAT low but I can believe it.
@ radco85- Pshhh those are both great scores.
overachiever92- Do you know any good stories from those people? @muzicjuni4 Like your sister’s SAT scores aren’t “low” in a broad sense, but if you’re talking about Ivy League that is “low,” it is. What do you think made her stand out?
@ IAmABeast- Lol, if you’re going to say it that way, then OF COURSE it’s going to be lower than many… “many” of the people who are in the 10% percentile in the nation or higher!

Probably her essays. She wrote about teaching herself Chinese and Korean. And now she’s going to Beijing with Princeton in the summer! So…I guess it worked.

I plan on majoring in biochemistry and hope to be part of the Vagelos MLS program; I absolutely love science! I am an AP Scholar, I was one of four semifinalists for poetry in the CT Young Writer’s Competition, and I received a unique award for “science merit” which was made for me in my sophomore year; again, nothing really special, one would think, for a school of Penn’s caliber. Other than tutoring, being liaison to the principal, and being an active member of the NHS, I had pretty weak extracurriculars for what you would expect to see (no sports, leaderships outside of chem club, etc), too. I think my gpa/course schedule, passion (both essays), and letters of recommendation really spoke for me. I am proud of my test scores, but they are nowhere near as impressive as many of my peers.

Got 2190 my first sitting, retook and got a 2050 the second time. School doesn’t rank, thanks to the Spanish department reorganization I had to take Spanish 3 twice, and no one from my high school has ever gotten accepted to Penn before.

^no, your just proof that outliers exist in the admissions process. But ur right, the process is holistic and a 1950 or something like that SAt doesn’t mean your out of the running it just means your chances of acceptance (assuming unhooked) are probably less than 2-3% (or something like that). Still not zero though :)
