Who has gotten "low" SAT scores and still made it into Penn?

@Daplan101 Haha I’m also attending the University of Florida also if I hear nothing back from everywhere else. UF is still a decent school though, and I’d be content there.
I might run into your friend… although it’s a huge school.

Reflection
Strengths: ESSAYS-they were very sincere, EC, leadership
Weaknesses: low SAT score
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: genuine about coming to penn
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: accepted UT business honors, waitlisted emory, rejected columbia, yale, and nyu
General Comments: very surreal right now. many user on CC cannot “predict” chances with no SAT/ACT score like thats THE deciding point. they would have laughed at mine and told me i would be straight out rejected. I showed an interest in attending penn and told the teachers that wrote my recs genuine reasons why and i think they included that in their recs. you should deff communicate with the teachers writing your recs instead of picking them just because you get A’s in their classes. my teachers and counselors wrote my recs with no resume or questionnaire because they know what to write based on our interactions. Most of all, I think being sincere is a MAJOR deciding point.

@muffin
That’s my SAT score…
hopefully i can be like your friend
crosses fingers

@ Muffin Do you know anything about your friend that can be shared publicly?

My S applied through QuestBridge too but didn’t make finalist. He was accepted ED to Wharton w/SAT 1970…he got a 730 Math 1, 770 Math 2 and bombed physics w/600. He has a 4.0uw/4.2w with amazing ec’s.

You guys have no idea how comforting this thread has been to me.

I was deferred with an 1840 composite score, 1760 in one sitting… thought I would be rejected right away with these scores, but I do have hope!

There will always be kids who get in b/c the adcoms simply liked them even if they don’t have stellar scores, GPA, or EC’s. My friend last yr got in Yale RD with a 1990 SAT and 3.8 GPA weighted gpa w/o any hooks. However he did have a pretty compelling essay about a near-death experience which my college counselor said it was the best essay he ever read.

not that I know of? Why do you think you know me?

@dnjsmom88- Congratulations! ED does seem like it helps out applicants. I hope your s does welll at UPenn. Is he in the class of 2015?
@maserrano- I was hoping to help someone out, including myself.
@upennfreak- Well you had a 80 point increase, do you have any “awesome” ECs? I hope you get in though!
@Daplan101-Essays are really important in the admissions process. That sounds so coool but terrifying. :X Sooo what about his ECs?
@rainbowdazzle Were you talking to chjelly? I think you hit the reply button thinking it would quote chjelly or something. Also were you the “stereotypical” Ivy Applicant or were you more “average”? Haha

for those of you who got in with low SAT I scores, did you send in good SAT II scores?

I took three tests, once each. My sophomore year, I received Bio M = 720, and junior year, I received Chemistry = 730 and Latin = 630 (test was SO different than just translating Cicero). I applied as a biochemistry major (I plan on that), but I am not sure that those were “good” scores for Penn (next to my 1300 / 1600 on SAT, a 1450 / 1600 on my major-related SAT II might have looked good, though?).

Since I want to be a biochemistry major as well, I took Chem and Math II. I got 800’s on both, so I guess that made up for my 670 on Critical Reading.

The SAT II’s are a good opportunity to show what you’re best at, especially if you want to major in the sciences but aren’t as good at English, and vice versa.

I have a 1990 single. 2000 super. haha.

I founded this tho: http://www.ssasf.org

this may or may not be helpful to some of you.

for starters, i was accepted early decision to penn through questbridge (shout out to class of 2015!). second, my SAT score was 1800 for the first sitting and 1790 for the second sitting (my super score was 1860).

my extra curriculars were okay (newspaper EIC, varsity track, writer for regional paper, Relay for Life participation for 4 years, etc) and my other scores were okay (5 calculus, 3 bio, 3 english).

no, i didn’t get in for athletics (and i obviously didn’t get in with my amazing scores). but what i think really helped were my personal statements. i don’t want to go into detail, but let me just say that the few who read them had trouble keeping their tears in.

i mean, scores aren’t everything. my really close friend (and i’m not making this up) got into yale with a 1760 first sitting (i’m not sure if he took it again, but i doubt he improved much if he did). people got DENIED with 2300s early decision to penn last year, yet i got in with an 1800 flat. just goes to show you that it’s the WHOLE package, and scores play a SMALL part in the BIG picture of college admissions.

relax. be hopeful. everything happens for a reason.

@adrianrios- Questbridge DEFINITELY played a big part in it since it really targets your background and since your essay was very sad and compelling, it definitely made your application that much more interesting. And I’m sorry about whatever happened . :expressionless: Congratuations! Your case is a bit more unique than regular applicants though. You did Early Decision through Questbridge.

I actually still think scores play a big part because I’ve seen a lot of people get lower GPAs and make it up with a high SAT/ACT around here. Not saying it’s with Ivy Leagues but like the better state schools or certain scholarships at least. I’m not saying scores are the ONLY thing though. However, there will be outliers and there will be those exceptions such as your friends.

definitely! i completely agree. the questbridge app itself highlights my specific background’s struggles, which the common app does only to a certain degree. i mean, that is the whole point of questbridge afterall.

i do agree with you on that second part. i also know a person who had a really good SAT score (2280ish) and not-so-good grades (she had a death in the family and got distracted from school work). she got into Columbia in the end.

BUT, one of the early decision admits from this year got into Penn with a 1920 super score. it’s a good score - don’t get me wrong - but it’s not the best. she didnt get in with questbridge either. it just goes to show you that scores are NOT everything. it plays a big part - there’s no disputing that. but a “low” score CAN get you in early decision provided that the other sections of your app are strong. admissions people don’t have a minimum score requirement - your ENTIRE application will get reviewed. they look at everything closely.

i don’t know if this is helping. please let me know if you have any questions.

Don’t think SAT is that important, as long as you have around 2000+ then its alright.
My sister got in ED with a 2170 and a 3.6/4 GPA. (we don’t have weighted gpa at our school)

Does anyone know of someone who got in that only sent SAT I or ACT scores without subject tests?
