I am excited for you!! One thing that pleased my D about Rhodes , and was an absolute requirement, was that the students stayed on campus on weekends since she would be a 9 and a half hour drive away. With over 70% out of state , I think y'all will be part of a vibrant campus life.

plus the lucky fathers get to start inserting up their "y'alls" into everyday conversation !

the fact that so many people stay on campus was a huge plus for me too. im so excited!!

ps youre going to love the south

My D chose Rhodes over the weekend over several other small liberal arts schools and UC-Santa Barbara. I have to admit I was a bit shocked. I can't imagine anyone turning down a chance to go to school in Santa Barbara, CA, a virtual paradise. This makes me all the more proud of her decision to attend Rhodes. UCSB would have been a no-brainer for most kids in that it is highly ranked, located in a gorgeous setting and is known for its legendary parties. She's always known what's best for her and it's apparent that she was very comfortable with what she saw in Rhodes from her visit last week.

One thing that has been mentioned here is that Rhodes students stay on campus over the weekends. We walked UCSB on a Saturday morning taking video. When watching it back the first thing people say is, "Where's the students?" This campus of 20,000 was a ghost town.

I just hope the average 10 degree difference between Austin and Memphis and 18 more inches of rain annually doesn't "dampen" her spirits.

congrats Tomster. D just got word that a student she met at a weekend at Rhodes was attending, also. Turned down Duke. Rhodes is an up and comer, and our kids will help them keep that movement upward alive. You can do great things at Rhodes the greatest of which is to prepare yourself for life. They will be in a great place.

I was taken off the waitlist and now i have to decide between Rhodes and St. John's College. The one thing thats holding me back is the Frat life. Is it as bad as everyone says?

My daughter thought it was not a big deal. I talked to 4 sets of parents of kids who joined. 3 sets told me that their kid had seriously considered (un-pledging? resigning? abdicating?) as they felt that after year one they didn't need a frat or sorority. None suggested it was very exclusive.

I am a freshmen at Rhodes and noticed you mentioned something about the weather in Austin. I am from austin and went to westlake high school. What high school did you daughter go to?

Rhodess,

My daughter is graduating from St. Stephen's this month. It seems SSS places 2 or 3 kids per year into Rhodes. One thing she hates is cold weather and cloudy, dreary days. How do Memphis Winters compare to Austin's?
How are you liking Rhodes?

TomsterMV,

I love it here. The work is pretty tough but managable. I definately have had to learn how to prioritize my time. The work load for me I thought was definately a huge jump from what I had in highschool. Anyway...thats not what you asked about. The WEATHER I personally like better than Austin. I'm not sure what the average amount of rain is here but to me it doenst seem like it rains any more here than it does in Austin. The avg. temperature is about 9-10 degrees cooler which I really like. There have only been a few days which have been unbearably hot. It also snowed around 5 inches here one day during the winter along with some pretty hard freezes.
I don't think it usually gets as gold as it did this winter though. For the most part, it is really not much different than Austin's weather. Right now during the day it is in the 70's and 80's unlike Austin where it is probably in the 90's. Other than that, the campus is amazing, the food is not bad, the dorms are nice, the academics are challenging, the professors are awesome, the students for the most part are friendly, the social life is great, and the name is prestigious.

rhodesss,

as a student, what is your opinion of the influence of greek life?
