I was wondering...am I considered a URM?:
I consider myself "African American" and not "Black American" because I am an African immigrant with American citizenship (i came here 11 yrs ago). However, I am also from a low income, underrepresented, background and first generation to college. How would colleges look at this?

if you have great stats, then colleges would look at it great.

I do....

Black Male (maryland)

First choice...UNC- Chapel Hill

ACT:30
GPA W: 4.2
UW:3.7

I hope i get in lol

how hard was the classes?

my school has mostly honors classes and a few AP's and we are only allowed to take 3 Ap's a yr. I have 13 honors classes total and 3 AP classes senior year. I go to a private school in D.c. that doesnt rank even though I live in MD

Most colleges wouldn't see your status as African-American or "Black"-American, but just African. Your indigenous to Africa quite simply, and a significantly URM.

Don't think of it that way because colleges don't, they consider you as you. With a great essay you can bring out your identity as an African immigrant highl;ighting the experiences you've had and how they have shaped you as a person and how you will use them to shape your future

I myself am not an African immigrant but my parents are Nigerian immigrants, I made that apparent in my essay and how that shaped me. It helped me a lot in my college process. As someone straight from Africa you probably have more significant experiences living in a country other than you own.

By the way, you can get sweet scholarships for being the first generation in your family to go to college, from what I've seen through a friend.

Me too

Black American Male (Louisiana)

SAT: 1320 ( got a 35 in math act so reataking to get 750+ SAT math) this would raise up to at least 1400.
GPA 3.93 uw

Good ECs Great Recs

Most likely: MIT, Rice or UT-austin.

My stats are Okay

SAT 1270/1870

GPA 3.8527

Lots of ECs. Most likely I will apply to Harvard ED.

Ghanian Pride!!!

What would be considered URM?

Gay, Jewish, Eurasian, Female?

I'm not sure if gay or Eurasian would...but jewish female no

Im a first generation American w/ Nigerian parents 2

it seems like most the URMs here are from African descent

I am. :)

First generation Canadian with two Nigerian parents.

What's with all these 1st generation Nigerians? I'm not first generation but i am an actual "Nigerian immigrant" but i dont know why i should be called that since i came here when i was too young to remember anything. So i m just gonna call myself a first generation since i have no thoughts of ever going back to live there and america is the only home i know. :):)
