Who hates telling people you applied to Harvard?

Oh and of course

If you get in: "SEE, I TOLD YOU you'd get in! You had nothing to worry about!"

If you don't get in: "Oh, well, I'm sorry. You are sooo good. You're too good for HYP"

Yeah...neither reaction ...is great...

coureur, your post just made me chuckle.

In retrospect, it would have been nice to keep my early application anonymous, but sometimes it's not possible to contain all of that anxiety/excitement about Harvard.

Agreed. I couldn't hold it in, but I really wish I could, because now I have this guy in physics giving me the countdown everyday. 9 days...

No offense to you guys, but you're applying to Harvard. If you cant handle some stupid stigmata that goes along with the most prestigious school in the world, you probably shouldnt attend. :P

Haha, it's always fun to talk about it :P

Strawboy: well...at the same time, dont you have acquaintances or no-so-close friends who tell you that you're going to get in?

The only interest my acquaintances have with my app to Harvard stems from the fact that one of my friends said that he will shave his head if I get into Harvard.

jpod i don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to avoid the awkward situations that often follow telling someone you applied to Harvard

I think there's a lot wrong with it.

Geez, jPoD, that's a nasty thing to say...

Getting weird looks every time you say what college you're applying to would bother anyone. What you said is just plain weird- it comes from the assumption that Harvard applicants- or students- are some different species.

And from wikipedia: Stigmata are bodily marks, sores, or sensations of pain in locations corresponding to the crucifixion wounds of Jesus Christ. An individual bearing stigmata is referred to as a stigmatic.

I hope we don't have to handle stigmata :(

Yeah, never knew that a Harvard applicants had to suffer such torture. Now I REALLY don't want to go to Harvard... just think of what they must do to their students if they crucify their mere applicants!!

Well, it's more like self-crucifixion. psychological self-crucifixion.

I think that it is best to be honest and sincere.

By the way, Big H applicants... Wanted to share a happy story with you guys. I successfully said "Harvard" today without dying and without the person having a fit.

I hemmed and hawed a bit, naming my matches/safeties, and finally said, "This is stupid. Ok, I applied to Harvard early and I'm finding out next week."

The immediate reaction was just, "Oh, good for you." Gotta love my art teacher.

jPoD...I don't think you realize how pretentious it can sound for one to say that one is applying to Harvard.

While most people will react normally, there is always someone who's going to think differently--either someone who has deeply held antiestablishment beliefs or someone who didn't get in...etc. I'm not saying these people are in the majority, if fact, I think they consist of a very small percentage but they nonetheless exist.

I honestly think saying you are an Olympic Gold-Medalist is significantly less pretentious. It's funny because the students at Harvard are no smarter, more intelligent, more creative etc. compared to the students at schools like Yale, Stanford, or for that matter, Northwestern, Cornell, CMU etc (name your favored school of choice that has a decent reputation in academia). Yet...saying you go to Harvard (or are applying) seems to give some people the impression that you feel superior to everyone, when in fact you harbor no such feelings at all. It's just the nature of the beast.

By the way, I think you meant stigma...not stigmata. (stigmata, I believe is the plural form of the word)

ok, you tell me which person you like the least:

A) the counselor who tells you "your grades alone will get you into harvard"
B) the bitterly conservative teacher who tells you "you couldn't stay in harvard" because of your liberal tendencies
C) the classmate who insists on applying to harvard to increase the total number of applicants in an attempt to decrease your chances. not even kidding.

i picked C. we have the same SAT score, so somehow that makes us intellectual rivals :/. he wants to kick me "down where i belong." this same kid insisted on taking the ACT after he found out that i took it. i regret telling anyone that i applied to harvard. it seems to inspire either jealousy, misplaced awe, or unbridled, naive optimism. but, the cat's out of the bag now. if i don't get in ea, i know that it's not because of a personal deficiency, but thats the way everyone else in my school will take it.

chum bucket... are you serious? If so, that is incredibly sad and ridiculous. I'm guessing your GC is not well acquainted with Ivies and your classmates have crazy, irrational, sadistic streaks. Good luck!

well my assigned counselor is going through a divorce so she's not exactly all there. and i go to a school with about 95% apathetic students and a top 5% cutthroat "elite." my school disgusts me.

What I said is weird? No. Nasty? No. I understand that some baggage comes with the word 'Harvard' but seriously, all that matters is that the right people take you seriously. Who cares about stupid people you meet in the street or whatever.

WindCloud, I know what youre saying. The Olympic gold medalist reference was hilarious.

Anyway, i'll hopefully be watching from across the river at BU. I heard you guys have decent parties (or is that MIT? I'm sure both do). Although I heard you dont let male BUers in :P
I promise not to think youre all pompous, pretentious bastards when I meet you ok? :)

I only tell close friends that I applied to Harvard. Similarly,I only tell them about achievements I'm proud of, because they know how hard I worked and how much it means. The majority of my school shrugs it off as "she's smart, of course she got that."

I go the vague route when colleges come up. "Where are you going to college?"
'I wish I knew!"
"Where did you apply?"
"A bunch of places."
"Oh...well where do you want to go?"
"somewhere on the coasts..out of the midwest! gotta go bye."
