I heard it's extremely difficult to get merit money. Did anyone here get any? How much did they give you? I saw the scholarship booklet, and they do not seem to give away much money (only to the best of the best applicants). I'm satisfied about my grants, but I want to know what it takes to get a scholarship from Umich.

I got a merit scholarship for 5k; my stat's weren't spectacular for an OOS student. I'll post later.

I got the Scholar Recognition Award for full tuition.
GPA 3.76
ACT 31
2 ECs
not very impressive, but I'm half mexican. =/

Jimmy, was it 5k for four years or each year?

5k for each year...stats..*SAT I/II scores: 710 V/ 700 M 780 MIC/ 730 US / 660 W
*GPA: 3.65 UW Fairly difficult, all honors, 3 APs
*Class Rank: School doesn't rank, probably around 400/800...

One more thing: Around when did you apply?

Also, do you know if there are chances for scholarships after first year?

Thanks, Jimmy, for your input.

I actually applied fairly late, around Jan. 15...I checked the financial aid website and there are other scholarships that you can apply for after getting in, some need-based others merit-based. (my family's EFC was very high, I was very surprised wheni checked the financial aid website.)

Wow, you reply very fast.

It's just that I applied December (during Christmas break), which is kinda late also since many encourage applying before October. I got no merit scholarships. Then again, some people who applied early in September didn't get any either. So I was confused about how they give out the $$, whether it's mostly merit or time-based.

I had a 1470/710/720/700, 4.63W GPA, 19/275 rank.

Not like I care too much about not getting any because I received a good financial aid package for an OOS student. Maybe they balanced it out for me. But I just wanted to know how scholarships were given out and whether I could try to get some next year. Thanks again Jimmy.

I'm thinking the above individuals' money must have been somewhat need-based because I also applied around October with

1510/800/800/750
Natl Merit Finalist
13 AP's
Top 1% of class
Numerous state academic awards, etc.

and I still didn't get a cent in merit aid. To me, it just doesn't make sense unless their aid was somewhat need-based.

That's why I was thinking Umich merit scholarships were nearly impossible to get. But thanks guys for your input.
