So...how many of you have received likely letters? Do colleges really send those out? Is it a truly rare event to get one? What do you think the circumstances for getting one is?

I've applied to 10 pretty competitive schools RD, I know I'm pretty much in at at least 3 or 4. No likely letters.

One dean of admissions wrote me an email after reading my application urging to apply to the honors program, I guess that's somewhat of a likely letter? but not really

^How do you know you're in at 3 or 4 of them without likely letters?

because my stats are at the top of the application pool for those schools and also my essay details a pretty fancy medical problem that makes a good story

key words "pretty much in"

My friend got a likely letter from yale, so yes they do exist. unless she's lying which i doubt she is.

yale does send out likely letters.

i got one from my safety muhlenberg
technically it was an invitation sent to all the top applicants urging us to apply to an honors program. it said at the bottom that while it was not an official acceptance letter, it could be taken as a "good sign"

Got one from Rice.

I got a letter from some college (don't remember the name); it described their programs in great detail.

But at the bottom of the message, in small text were the words : "This does not indicate an acceptance."

My read on this is that it is an enrollment management letter. The school is interested....up to a point. How much financial aid would your admission cost them?

My guess is that the application is "admissible" but not over-the-top- wowwing that would get a real likely letter--if it was, thery would not be asking for financial aid info before making their decision. However, it's clear that the application is receiving real consideration, and that's a good sign.

Our son recieved two formal LLs, Duke and UNC, and a hand written note from a recruiter at UMCP. So I guess that's three.

However, he couldn't understand how he could be one of the top 350 applicants (out of 20,000) at Duke and deferred SCEA at Yale.

^ That's very much possible. There is a world of difference between Yale and Duke.

My son received notification of Regents Scholarships at two state schools and info about Honors Day, etc. I don't think either packet actually said "You're admitted" but one did ask for the response on the scholarship to be submitted by May 1. He's also a finalist for a merit scholarship at another private school but nothing was said in the letter about being admitted.

i got a likely letter for dartmouth

I received a LL from Virginia (OOS).

Not top 3% stats-wise at all (very avg OOS stats), but my ECs were pretty excellent, TONS of leadership experiences, varsity letters, founded clubs, etc. And my essays were unique and creative. So I guess it isn't all about the stats lol.

^Re: Yale/Duke

Did he get significant accomplishments / dramatically better essays between SCEA time and RD application time?

I got deferred from Yale and got a likely from Stanford, but I can probably attribute that to awards won between November and February.

A lot of people have reported getting likely e-mails from Columbia. Some have reported getting likely letters from both Harvard and Yale.

Check the respective forums for the threads.

Columbia, stanford and yale.

Rice and Cornell Engineering
