i'm trying to change my schedule for my writing 39a class and the class i'd like to take had 2 profs: STAFF and Allen, B.
the thing is, what do they mean by staff?

From what I hear, it’s usually a TA. There are a bunch of classes where you never see the professor, just a graduate student who teaches for the professor.

ummm so would you advise that i take this class?

You have to take writing regardless, so yes.

It usually means they haven’t decided on a teacher/ will be released laterrr…

Writing is always a graduate student instructor. Staff just means that they haven’t got an instructor yet.

I don’t know but if you’re taking Bobby Allen for Writing, I just wanna say I had her for Writing 39b and I LOVED her.

What is the final/midterm for writing 39b?? If you remember, PoorCookie?

u have to write papers

not take midterm/final

Yep, exactly. Two major projects: a paper about rhetorical analysis, and a project on demonstrating rhetoric itself.

*my apologies for thread-stealing… but!

From your experiences, did it matter much which TA taught which writing class? How was the difficulty/grading of the major projects?

And if you took 39C, was 39B or C harder? (in your opinion ofc)

I had friends who had graduate students as the instructor, but as for me personally, I actually had a seasoned writing professor (Allen), so I can’t speak for you. But of course, it definitely matters who teaches it, because depending on the person, you’ll either be interested in the class or very, very sleepy and bored. If you’re asking about the grading, I’d say it depends on how hardcore your prof. is.

I did not take 39C because I was able to take Consciousness (University Studies 15) which had credit towards a research writing class. However, from the suffering I saw from my friends, I think writing 39b is SO much more enjoyable. You get to do blogs, projects, rhetorical essays. Fun stuff, depending on your theme (mine was superheroes). For research writing if you’re really unlucky your class theme might be about plants (no joke, my friend had that).

I would say that the class depends a lot on having a good TA. Luckily both my 39B and C TAs were not that bad. I thought writing 39C was easier because I liked the type of writing we did for the Argument/Research course than the more abstract writing for 39B.

i think the grading depends on who is teaching you. i had a graduate student (seybold) and i loved the class. he was very easy to talk to and also very helpful. I haven’t taken 39c yet (it’s always full!) so i have nothing to report about that :)
