Hey guys,

I just wanted to make this thread so we can get to know some people going.

So who is going to Emory and WHY? Why does it attract you? Anything is appreciated.

Thanks

Me. Probably. But I haven’t got my aid yet.
I’m going to emory because I figured that the girls would be smart which means they’d be more likely to know what’s good for them which means they’re likely to go out with me.

^^ haha. I’m pretty sure I’m going unless I get no aid.

I’m going to Emory! It’s not official, but my only bona fide offer is Wake Forest…

While both are impressive schools with beautiful campuses and intelligent students, Emory will offer a much better education overall. The professors care more about the students and all that balderdash, but it is a superior academic institution with extremely high amounts of money spent in research and financial aid thanks to Coca Cola. It is also in Atlanta, a wonderful city with tons of stuff to do… probably the most metropolitan school in the south, which brings me to my next point…

Emory is diverse! It isn’t made of up of rich white kids, which I personally love, though I am admittedly one of them haha… but don’t judge me, I’m not the typical one… I hate brand-name clothes and I have a personality hahaha. ANYWAY I think that being away from the typical southern-run white population is a nice break. In these respects Emory is similar to an Ivy League school, wtih many nationalities, ethnicities, and races. It also has a lower focus on athletics and a higher focus on academics and the humanities. There are no athletic scholarships! That means at places unlike Duke or Wake, there will be no dumb athletes who got accepted with sub-par stats. and unimpressive applications.

I’m glad you’re going! Maybe we’ll meet some day!

(of course, you would never know it…)

Also, Emory is a top 20 college haha… that’s hard to beat by any means.

Me! My mom’s BFF works there and her son’s going there as well so there’s a friendly face. And I can’t wait to drink bubble tea in Chinatown!!! OMG HOW I HAVE MISSED BUBBLE TEA. Yay!

^^ hehe, exactly. Can’t wait to be around a “Chinatown” again.

Theres a China town???

I thought there was only like 2 % asian (Atlanta population)!

I’m going to Emory. very excited.

there are actually so many asians here, especially koreans

Isn’t 30% of Emory student body asian?

yeah like 25ish…But the asain pop in Atlanta is actually very small for a big city.

Really? Are they very close together, then, the Asians? Because where I live, even though there’s a pretty big Asian population, everyone’s so spread apart that it’s difficult even finding a decent Asian supermarket.

Oh btw, what do Emory students do for fun that doesn’t require a car and the city?

I’m going to the open house on the 23rd!! I am deciding between Emory or Hopkins, but I think the 15k scholarship I got at Emory will tilt the scale towards Atlanta! :)

Trying to decide between Emory and Tulane Honors Program with $22k/yr Merit Scholarship.

Emory>>>>>Tulane.

Helvetica

Emory is similar to Hopkins in many ways… both are great… Hopkins is cutthroad (from what I hear) whereas this is less the case for Emory. Come to Emory :)

LOL, I wouldn’t say Emory>>>>>Tulane. It has somewhat higher stats for the SAT and ACT (The midpoint for the ACT is 30.5 for Tulane and 31 for Emory, for example), and Emory does have more students that were in the top 10% of their high school class. I certainly won’t argue that Emory isn’t more selective that Tulane, even if 5 >'s might be a bit overboard, lol. Tulane is an excellent school also and New Orleans is a different environment than Atlanta. It just comes down to what northerner is looking for during the next 4 years and which school can better provide it. There is more to it than the classroom, although obviously that is a big factor. Also, is there a financial difference and is that a significant factor to him?

I think midpoint ACT for Emory is a bit higher… regardless, 5 >>>>> is probably not the way to go… I was just saying… in terms of academics, Emory is definitely better… in terms of facilities, Emory is better as well… in terms of prestige, Emory is higher. Overall, Emory is simply better… I think you would agree with me.

I can’t comment on the academics overall, because I have no basis for comparison. I am not sure how you would either if you haven’t experienced Tulane personally. I mean, are you saying that for teaching undergraduate level classes Tulane profs aren’t as capable as Emory profs? I would find that astounding. Tulane is a gorgeous campus, but the Emory facilities are certainly the best Coca-Cola can buy. They are really nice. And Emory is higher ranked, yes. These are all important factors, but since one can certainly come out of Tulane with the same level of education within any given major, there are other factors to consider. That’s all I am saying.

Oh, and the 25%-75% range for Emory ACT is 29-33, so the midpoint will be close to 31. I realize mathematically it could be different if the data were unusually skewed, but that is unlikely. Tulane is 29-32. Anyway, Emory, Duke, Wash U, Chicago and a few other non-Ivies are certainly that level above Tulane when it comes to pure statistics of the student body. But that is only part of the decision tree.

That’s why when someone simply posts “X vs. Y which should I choose”, it is kind of useless if they don’t say what they are looking for in a school and its surroundings, what is important to them.

Just for information only.

There exists large Asian population in Atlanta, but not in Atlanta city limit. Most East Asians mainly located in North Fulton/West Gwinnett (Johns Creek, Duluth, Suwanee, Alpharetta).

For Korean goods, the best bet is Duluth, GA. There are several supermarket chains (Super H Mart, Assi), Korean BBQ and Korean bakeries around that area.

For Chinese goods, there is small Chinatown in Chamblee. Also, there is several Chinese restaurants nearby on Buford Highway as well.
