Who is Going To Penn State Main

Well I put down East when I turned in my money and stuff for Room-Board and Food Package thing. And I turned my stuff in a long time ago,, so I'm pretty certain I'll end up in East.

Two reasons actualy. Big 10 football. I went to this years Penn State Ohio State and Penn State Michigan games and really loved the atmosphere. I actually sat in the student section and spent the rest of the weekend up there with a friend and it was totally awesome. So the limited to Michigan or Penn State and then it came down to money. I live in PA so PSU is a whole lot cheaper. Also I got into Schreyers so that looks just as good when applying to Grad and Law school as an Ivy. So thats why I am going to State College next year.

Nice, I turned my stuff in beginning of march and put down east hall too dude.

nazhockey, what school did you get into at Cornell? I am trying to decide between cornell and penn state too.

I got into Engineering everywhere that I applied.

Here is my two sense on the Cornell Vs University Park issue... I think that there really is not to much sense in spending 2X as much money for not that much difference in eduaction. In my oppinion and the oppinion of my father (an engineer) and a few of my friends parents who are engineers, grad school and summer internships are just as important if not more important that undergraduate education. Also Penn State has a much more active and exciting social scene and way way more school spirit. (hard to beat a game at Beaver Stadium, I've been to one in The Big House (michigan stadium the largest in the country) and it just isn't like Beaver. So thats why i chose Penn State and besides what kind of mascot is "Big Red"?

West is the Best!! East sucks!!! No in all honesty the dorms can be ranked like this. 1) honors 2) West 3)Pollock or South 4)South or Pollock 5)East 6)North. Trust me I have been inside each of them and that is the way it is. I don't understand all of these people that really want to be in East. They are the smallest and least nice of the dorms, and they are only really close the the Stadium and not much else.

lol East isnt that bad, and your surrounded with other Freshman....so boom their's your reason. Plus the East Commons(I believe thats what it is) is pretty nice. And East is by the IM building :).

Yeah, i chose east because youll be surrounded by all the other freshman, even though theyre not the nicest.

I just turned in my housing deposit and chose East :). Ive been in those as well Naz and I really didnt see why ppl were complaining about East....their dorms aren't that bad (I guess it is all relative though.)

Go college of Engineering BTW :)

I called PSU last Friday and they told me that they ran out of dorms -- you will be put in supplemental housing until things clear up. Because of this, PSU was crossed off my list.

PSU sucks, figures something like that would happen. You'd think for 36 grand a year for OOS tuition they'd build some new residence halls to prevent this.

It sure isn't a very nice way to welcome freshmen.

It's not a matter of not having enough dorms. (Well, it is somewhat.) An admissions person told me while I was there that they admitted 2000 more students than they usually do this year and that more of them accepted than anticipated. So that's lending to the shortage.

And besides, it might not be too bad. I'm excited about having 6-7 new friends to start the year off with. You get more space, more microfridges, a study lounge practically to yourself, and something to make you appreciate it when you get a double dorm. And at least they're not making anybody move off-campus as a freshman yet. At PSU-Altoona, where one of my friends is going, she has to live off-campus. I mean, what?

It's also partly our fault for deciding so late - they have rolling stuff and we knew that. shrugs I mean, it's all over the site that housing was running short earlier this year. All the same, I wish I'd accepted earlier so I'd have a dorm room. (I sent in my deposit...Monday? Oi.)

i hope i get my dorm room in Pollock. I sent my info back in the second week of feb. One question, if you get picked for a special living option housing, are u guaranteed housing for 4 years?

If you sent it in that long ago you should be ok. As far as staying in that SLO next year it probably depends on which one you picked. Several say freshmen only (First year in LA and Education and Discover House). Discover House is for kids who are undecided and hopefully after being there a year you would know what you want to do (or have a little better idea) and move on. Looks like you could then choose another SLO if you wanted. Don't know about the housing guarantee.

Keep in mind that normally it has not been so tight for housing. Last year around a dozen kids did not get a contract, this year is was big news because it was around 1200.

The thing that I find difficult about housing contract system is that you do not find out what you got until the summer. You may get a contract, and you can request an area and a room type, but that is not guaranteed and you do not find out until July what and where you end up. I know many engineering students who requested West for their second year (close to Hammond and IST) but they got placed elsewhere.

I'm a Penn State Alum. First of all I'd have to agree that your SATs are extremely low to be accepted at PSU-UP. That said --- so what! They've accepted you -- for whatever reasons -- you have an amazing opportunity to go to a world class university. I understand that others who were rejected with much higher scores would be upset but honestly that's not your problem.

Getting in to PSU is just the beginning next comes the hard work! Keep focused and don't let the many distractions at PSU ruin your balance. Study hard and you will succeed!

Best of Luck!!

Thank you I needed that kind of advise right now. I have some questions for you. Why did u pick penn state? What did u like most about penn state? What did u not like most about penn state? And is getting a job easier with the alumni network? once again thanks

I went to Penn State a long time ago BA - 1982 and my MS in 2000. My father was a Penn State professor (Math) who worked at a local campus. Why did I go to Penn State? Because I was from a large family and professors did not make a lot of money but they did get great college discount for their kids. I didn't use an alumni network and have been at the same job for 21+ years.

You'll do fine whatever it is you do in life if you stay focused on what's important and have a good set of priorities in life. Also, don't let the party scene steal you away from studies. Have fun but not too much. What did I like most about Penn State --- it was big enough for anyone to be an individual.

I agree with AdvicePlease about staying focused. I was there a long time ago too - BS in Marketing 1981. Chose Penn State because I lived in PA and it did not cost much. I liked it cause it was big and I met a lot of people, but did not like it too because it was big and it was hard to connect and easy to get lost in the shuffle.
I loved Center Halls where I lived (now called South Halls). Campus was beautiful. But, most of the freshman at that time were in East so I feel I missed out on meeting a lot of people.
Many parties on the weekend, another good way to meet people but there were also some really messed up people.
I changed my major three or four times because I has no idea what I wanted to do. I hear DUS (Division of Undergraduate Studies) has improved a lot over the years in terms of helping you decide. I must have seen an advisor but have no memory of it. If you need help you should go get it, it will not come to you.
Football games are awesome, and the school spirit is unbelieveable. You have to buy several uniforms (ie. Penn State t-shirts) because that is what everyone wears. You can get them for $7.99 at The Family Clothesline on College Ave across from South Halls. The Penn State Bookstore on campus is also very nice but pricier.

Good Luck!
