Who is going to UCSB.

Spring insight? What's spring insight? o_O. I'm thinking about going there, awaken, but I'm planning to visit this week (as it is spring break for me) so I dunno if I want to visit twice in such a short interval. Maybe i'll just not visit this week.

WHOO SB!

Spring Insight=Open house. I'm sure if you went this week and took a tour you'd get a good enough idea of the school, but Spring Insight has things geared towards prospective students AND students who have already been accepted. I was in SB a few days ago, and I'm pretty excited about going twice in such a short interval!

this is a balcony scene: as OP and current student.. do you know how the honors program is? basically, i am serious about learning, but want it to be a comfortable academic environment.. so i'm hoping ucsb + honors program would provide that combination.

& this is quite a cliched question, but would i fit in at ucsb if i would rather spend my time participating in organizations/volunteering or joining intramurals, rather than going to parties in isla vista?

i've heard that in recent years the party scene has declined, but what's your opinion on that? thanks!

Simplyxme-

I'm highly considering UCSB and I feel the same way. I'm not into partying and I want to be able to study in a nice environment. I've heard from friends at UCSB that it's possible to stay away from the parties and have fun. Other than that they highly encouraged me to attend UCSB.

yeah basically you either one of 2 students: you study more or you party more. So whenever SB is called a party school is only a half truth. it just depends what type of student you are.

so should I choose UCSB+Honors pgrm over UCD? or even UCB?? I know it should seem like a no-brainer, but... i'm having a difficult time deciding. hm. any comments?

I would definitely choose UCSBhonors over davis, but I don't know about berkeley...you've gotta really ask yourself what you want in a school.

i'm more of a passive type -someone who would get lost in the crowd at UCB. so i'm leaning toward UCSB. i think even though it is a big school, it's not as "driven" as UCB? i see it as a more relaxed environment...

ucsb is more chill, laid back, and not cutthroat

You'll seriously have less competition at UCSB simplyxme. Ask your counselor about it and find out exactly how much undergrad. schools matter toward grad. If it doesn't really matter, go to UCSB and get the higher GPA. =D.

I'm not gonna go :(

I'll be heading to duke :D :D :D

You should always challenge yourself.

awakenedream... Are you from La Canada? I ask this because there are so many kids at my school in the exact same boat you are. I think i might go to UCSB.. but i'm also deciding on Southern Methodist University in Texas... what do you think?

ps: Is there any way to actually learn at UCSB? Don't get me wrong, I love to party... but failing/the freshman 15 is not worth it.

mzlover, i understand what you mean. the thing is, i've always been in the special programs for "gifted" students and chose the "top" jhs and hs to attend. but i wasn't exactly happy with it, so i was thinking i'd stop that trend with the college i go to -and find a place where i'd really love returning to every semester. maybe it's idealistic? but maybe i could find it? i certainly started my college search with that in mind. now, a year later... i'm not sure where i should go. =Z ucsb does stand out in my mind, though.

and misterpenguin, it's hard for me to put grad school into the picture coz i don't know what i want to major in, much less if i want to go to grad school or not. oh, what a dilemma.

thanks for the comments. keep them coming if you have any. =P

kellosnax: nope not from la canada. from somewhere in the san fernando valley (la canada is probably 1hr+ from me)

Is there a way to actually learn? It's all up to the individual's self-motivation. You get out of anything in life what you put into it. If you are motivated, ambitious, and mature, you can make the most of everything. I've met some bright individuals from UCSB. They were able to have a great social life, develop good social skills, while still balancing academics and knowing when to study and when to party. They have great people skills and I'm sure they will do very well in future job interviews. The power is in you to make the most of it!

You guys make it sound like UCSB students party everyday LOL If that is the reason why you're coming to UCSB you're in for disappointment. Today is Tuesday 820PM...I'm in Manzanita next to IV.. IV is dead! BUt come friday and saturday night, throngs of students will be heading to IV. BUT more students stay in their dorms!

sup wellendowed, i was visiting ucsb last weekend with some friends. we partied like champs in IV friday night - god, de la playa & surrounding streets are SO MUCH FUN!!! when you're cough. and the girls are so ridiculously hot. not even funny hot. it's just plain crazy. makes me want to come to ucsb. manzanita is nice btw.

wellendowed: were you able to get manzanita as a freshman? i notice manzanita has limited freshman spots and mostly has upperclassmen. but it seems the nicest and less people to be a bathroom. if i put manzanita #1, is there a low likelihood i'll get it? and if i get manzanita, will it take away from the freshman college experience since there's only a little bit of freshman? also, for the other dorms where 20+ people share a bathroom, are those like locker halls in gyms with several showers, etc? sorry for my annoying questions, lol
