Who is planning on going to Open House on April 16th?

Another CalPoly parent here  making plans to attend open house. I donā€™t know whoā€™s more excited - me or my S!

Hey Nutellaella When are you leaving on the bus to go down there? Just in case we take the bus too, we can meet you! I am going with my son, but we might take the bus. If you feel like letting us know the time you are taking the busā€¦sorry your parents arenā€™t going.

haha oh itā€™s ok, iā€™m going alone because my parents are out of town! no biggy!
Iā€™ll probably head down on a thursday afternoon to catch the farmers market, because i have never been and it sounds funā€¦Where would you guys leave from? i am from the city so i have to catch the bus in San Jose.

Open House is great, because it is usually the prospective students first visit to campus, and it really gets them excited about attending Cal Poly. SOAR was definitely a great experience, because it familiarized my son with all that is Cal Poly, from the campus tours, housing tours, clubs, activities, the local community, how to register for classes using PASS and CPREG, etc etc. My son really liked most of WOW week, especially going to the beach, kayaking, BBQs, and getting to know people. By the time classes started he was very familiar and comfortable with his surroundings. I think this really helped him from feeling homesick.

Well, at least my daughter still has SOAR and WOW week since she canā€™t attend Open House. I hope sheā€™ll get just as much out of those two events as she would have at Open House. Iā€™m trying to make myself feel better because we canā€™t attend.

It will be okay 2Leashes! Wow week sounds like the most important way for the new students to connect with fellow classmates and the school. She will have lots of opportunities. I do understnad how you are feeling though!

Hi Nutellaella! We would be taking the bus from San Jose too. After talking to the friend of mine whose son is a frosh this year, we are going to go down Friday morning and stay over until Saturday. I donā€™t think we are going to go to the Farmerā€™s Market, although it sounds fun. I only want to spend one night in SLO. I was thinking about taking the bus down and my husband an daughter could come down Saturday for the fun and we could drive home. Not sure yet! My friend said that Friday and Saturday are the best. Lots of fun!

Is it necessary to attend both days of the Open House? I have an important track meet to go to on the 17th. :frowning: Iā€™m really sad about this. I canā€™t miss any track meets since Iā€™m captain of my track team.

^I think Friday is the most important day anyway because it is the newly admitted students day. saturday is open to the public and there are lots of tours for prospective students and of course some fun things like tractor pulls and a parade. I think going on Friday will be great for you! congrats on being captain of the track team and good luck! :)

We toured Cal Poly last year during spring break and came back a week later because son wanted to come during open house. Once he saw all the clubs, department displays and the tractor pull that his major (BRAE) puts onā€¦he was totally sold on Cal Poly!

Definitely attend if youā€™re undecided and on the fence. I would recommend coming just Saturday to see all the departments and talk to the profs in your department if youā€™re pressed for time.

Thanks for the good info. I love hearing how students love Cal Poly! It sounds like Friday and Saturday are really great!

I just booked our hotel room for Thursday and friday night. this way we can be there Friday morning ready to go and not have to worry about traffic getting there. We can stay for a good part of Saturday and then head home. Not sure if we will make it there on time for the Farmerā€™s Market, but thatā€™s okay.
I am excited!!!

Hey momofmv, what time are you planning on taking the bus down there?

nutellaella, (love your name, by the way)

My daughter is planning to travel to SLO for Open House as well. Sheā€™s flying by herself which is no problem, but I understand Cal Poly is not helping kids arrange housing. Iā€™m guessing youā€™re staying with a friend. Have you heard of any informal network for helping kids find a couch to sleep on for Open House? We only know a couple of guys at Cal Poly (weā€™re out of state) and are wondering if thereā€™s a way to connect with current (girl) students who might be amenable to hosting a visitor. Yeah, this is my second kid, so I know all about the college couch-surfing culture, and have decided its OK, under some circumstancesā€¦

Thanks!

Momofmv: What time do you think youā€™ll arrive on Thursday? Farmerā€™s Market is 6-9 PM, so hopefully you can enjoy part of it. Have fun! Iā€™ll be thinking of you while my dear daughter is off singing down in San Diego that weekend. :frowning: Well, one good thingā€”if she ends up at Cal Poly, she can take part in Open House for the next FOUR years. Maybe sheā€™ll be one of those kids active in various clubs and activities, helping potential students become acclimated to the campus. I have to look for the rainbow here.

nutellaella Not sure if we are taking the bus. I need to look at the schedule for leaving Thursday afternoon. When are you leaving? Do you know when the bus leaves from San Jose on Thursday?

iā€™m currently a freshman at cal poly and i went to open house last year. it was fun but not that important. i went down thursday night for the farmerā€™s market and stayed until friday afternoonish. friday is the most important day, i think.

ralph4, would you say this was a repeat of Thursday nightā€™s club booths at Farmerā€™s Market? In other words, do I need to stay Thursday evening if I can see the same things on Saturday?

**ralph4 said:

Saturday is mainly a showcase for the MANY student clubs and organizations that are available. Itā€™s pretty fun, but Friday is more important.

Go if you can! **
