Thread for skiers! What is your favorite destination and why? Colorado vs Utah vs Cali vs East Coast. Will this year’s El Nino bring record pow? Experts, Intermediates, and Jerrys all welcome here…
There are SO many great places. I really like Tahoe though, in particular Mt. Rose.
Whistler and Telluride. Our fams favorites. Kids learned at Steamboat - great schools.
Any place I can get too! Loved skiing in Utah at some of the small resorts near the Idaho border. Best skiing of my life though was in Courmayeur.
Clearly Colorado is my most accessible option, with lots of great ski area. I bought 3 days of EPIC passes, so for me this year it will be Breckenridge or Keystone or Vail or Beaver Creek. And maybe Ski Loveland if I get access to a 4pack ticket.
I grew up in NY and liked skiing there. But I do like it better in Colorado. Took Dad to Utah for is 75th birthday, and those places are nice too… but late spring skiing was tricky on our trip.
I’m Northeast so I’ll admit that I’d rather ski at any number of places in the West, I’ll take what I can get out here. It’s been pretty rough the last couple of years with later starts to winter and sproradic rain through the winter always lending a nice icy glaze to things.
Preferred area is Sunday River but it’s 3+ hours each way but for a day trip Loon or Cannon scratches the itch at closer to 2 hours.
We’ll be headed to Japan for 18 days this winter. We’ll ski at least 11.
Any NY skiers? I grew up skiing at places that at the time were called Highmount, Belayre, Cortina, Hunter, Catamount and Windham (where my father taught in the Adaptive program after he retired). When we lived near Binghamton we skied a few times at Greek Peak and Labrador.
I have never been a good skier, but I like(d) to do it.
Lake Tahoe and Breckenridge are probably my favorite places. I live on the east coast and never liked skiing here. I hate ice, and especially the sound your skis make going over ice. I felt like there was usually more ice than snow when skiing in the east.
I cringe when other skiers in Colorado complain about “ice”. I explain that it is hard pack… “where I come from, ice is blue”.
I grew up skiing at Belleayre and Plattekill.
Then skied Greek Peak, Toggenburg and Lab while living in Central NY plus lots of trips to Stratton in Vt.
I grew up alpine skiing (dad had been patroller and instructor at several places in the western US).
For years, spouse and I also lived near amazing skiing. We’d get season passes and ski a LOT. We liked telemark skiing the most, so we also did a lot of backcountry. We had all the safety gear and I completed certified avalanche training, etc. Those were the days.
Then we had kids and also moved to less amazing skiing. I pivoted to cross-country but never liked it as much. Now we don’t live near any skiing that makes it worth it to us. We still have all our gear, but it’s long since time to let it go since I don’t see us using it again
I’ll have to live vicariously through y’all. On the bright side, my knees are great and I haven’t had a concussion since I stopped skiing.
I grew up in Vermont skiing a small locals’ mountain and Mad River Glen. Now I go out West, but I remain a fan of the more independent places like Telluride and Sun Valley.
Jealous! Go shred it.
Mad River Glen, ski it if you can. I’d see those stickers on tele skier gear, even far out west
There’s no place like home. Winter Park, Copper Mountain, and Arapahoe Basin are my favorite hills. There are some local hills I enjoy but I’ve got to keep those a secret from the tourists. Planning a few days at Taos this year too. Snow is already falling in the mountains so hopefully it’ll be a good season!
I remember the Lake Placid Winter Olympics!
At least in CA, El Niño is supposed to bring the Pineapple Express and wet snow AKA “Sierra Cement”. Flying over the Sierra on Sunday I was surprised how much snow is still hanging on from last winter in shady areas.
Not a great picture as the window was quite reflective, but this is looking south over Yosemite to Mammoth (Mono Lake on the left):
I am an expert level skier and have been skiing for over 40 years and had my first injury, a freak accident in 2022 where I broke my tibia. I haven’t decided yet if I’ll ski again.
My brother is visiting tonight. He worked as a patroler for 30+ years at Steamboat and for another 5 at Winter Park. This is his first year of retirement. A shock for his kids, they have to buy ski passes this year for the first time in their lives.
He said they got about a foot at Steamboat last week, but it’s all gone now. I don’t think Colorado will have record snow this year because last year there was so much. We had great rain in May and June but it has been pretty dry since then (ask my roses!)
