Agh! I'm torn! Don't know whether I should accept (for presidential). I'd be missing 3 days of school (extra day for traveling - it'll take literally all day to fly there). And it's the week just before my HUGELY important final exams (weird scheduling with school). And the scholarship is not even a sure thing... (not even full tuition, at that). Any advice? Or anyone else in a similar situation?

I think it would be ridiculous not to go if you are seriously considering USC. How could you be torn? This is a massive amount of money. Most people who interview recieve some kind of scholarship, so it IS a sure-thing that you will get something, and all you have to do is show up and be friendly. Plus, at some point you will need to visit campus to see if it's the right fit. What better way than to spend a night in the dorms and meet with professors and students?

You can't get your hw done in advance? Study in advance? If your priorities are such that you can't work something out for three days a month away, USC shouldn't have given you the scholarship. Also, if I were your parents I would probably not allow you to attend if you decided not to do the scholarship interview. Bit of a lack of respect for their money, too.

I can't believe you would throw this opportunity down the tubes when people would kill to have gotten that :P.

Of course if you're not planning to attend USC then don't accept. But if it's still on your list, don't be hitting yourself later for missing this.

I agree here. It seems a little ridiculous to refuse such an amazing offer. I will also be missing classes, but look at it this way:

1.) USC obviously wants you, or else they wouldn't have wanted to offer a scholarship interview and accepted you so early. Some kids only DREAM of that.
2.) If you have the creds to get into USC, you're pretty much guaranteed a spot there, so if you don't do as well as you'd like with your finals, it's not the end of the world, and they're not gonna rescind your scholarship if they've already given it to you.
3.) Um....it's the frickin' University of Southern California. Need I say more?

lol, great empathy. But you guys are right - this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I'm most likely RSVPing for the March 1-2 session!

schitz -- my son was invited to interview for the Presidential Scholarship and he has already been admitted to the University of Texas for Engineering Honors (which is very selective and a really strong program). We debated about whether it would be worth it or not to miss 2 days of school and incur the expense of coming out to USC since there's a good chance he'd rather attend UT than USC, but it came down to the fact that it's a good idea to keep all your options open. Even though he's visited USC already (during the summer), this will give him a better idea of what it's like by staying in a dorm and sitting in on some classes. After that, he might prefer USC. He'll be attending the March 1-2 program. Maybe we'll see you there!
