Student needs a PIN, and one parent needs a PIN.

One PIN for each of the studnets for whom you desire to submit FAFSA. One PIN for either of the parents. Parent PIN can be used next year if you want to submit FAFSA for another student. Of-course same student PIN has to be used for next year when you submit FAFSA for same student next year.

HTH.

thanks. it does help. does it matter which parent has the pin (assume married and filing joint tx)?

^ Doesn’t matter. I got a pin for both H and me, as well as S. When I filed the FAFSA this morning, I used S’s and my pins. No need for H’s.

can you file fafsa before you have 2007 w2’s and before you filed 2007 taxes?

Yes, you submit it as a “will file” status. I used our most recent paystubs, and our 2006 tax return to estimate income & taxes. I will amend the numbers and change it to “have filed” status after we’ve done our tax returns, in Feb or March.
