<p>I'm a '15 and I just don't want to come to Penn anymore (although, of course, I most probably will). I wanted to ignore the trolls but, tragically, it seems they were at least half right. Penn just isn't what I imagined it to be. By the way, I realize that NSO is still 4 weeks away, but I already feel out of it, and am just not interested in it anymore.</p>
<p>Anyone else feeling the same way? </p>
<p>P.S: I want to go back to loving Penn, but I can't. Any advice? :(</p>

<p>Would be interested to know why you feel this way. Did something happen? Did you not visit a head of time and went and didn’t feel you fit? </p>
<p>Feeling anxious about going to a new place (especially college) can make it difficult to transition. Just remember everyone is a little nervous and not everyone is uber excited like those on CC & Facebook appear to be. </p>
<p>You will be leaving home, leaving your family, leaving high school, and leaving friend. It will be an anjustment. Did you sign up for any of the pre-programs?</p>
<p>I’ll gladly take the burden of attending Penn off of your back if you can just transfer your admission to me…</p>

<p>I think you will feel better about your choice once you get started.</p>
<p>Please don’t judge Penn by what you read on these forums. It paints a very warped picture of the school. Most people at Penn are a lot nicer, more down to earth, more passionate, more considerate, more creative, more intellectual, more open, etc… than they appear on these forums.</p>
<p>What Poeme said. Judging from your other threads, you and I are very similar and I had a lot of the same issues you have before I moved in. I got cold feet and still wasn’t too sure about it even through second semester of my freshman year, but now I consider Penn more of a home than my hometown.</p>
<p>For what it’s worth, I’m going back on September 1st for my junior year and I couldn’t be more excited. My freshman year I lived in the quad, sophomore in Harnwell, and this year have an apartment on 42nd.</p>
<p>That being said, I understand the apprehension part. I didn’t find the people I really wanted to hang out with until a little bit into school but since then Penn has been nothing but great.</p>
<p>I hope you enjoy the time left in the place you have and take Penn for what it is when you come for a wild week of NSO.</p>

<p>I was feeling it a little bit way before, around when people were getting their acceptance letters, for the same reasons that Poeme listed as things that you could guess from collegeconfidential. But now, I feel a lot better after talking to some people.</p>

<p>There is quite a lot of division though. For example, when I was weighing offers from Duke and Columbia, I remember there being only one FB group for each school, which every matriculated student was a part of. Maybe it’s Penn’s administration that’s at fault, because our only unified group was closed down for a page that no one even visits. Now we have another one, but it barely has 900 members lol.</p>
<p>Furthermore, Penn has just been incredibly annoying. I got Hill, my last choice, and didn’t get any of the four courses I registered for. Add to that, the ridiculous cost of Health Insurance and you can say that I wasn’t exactly pleased with Penn. But, whatever, it is what it is: the best school in the world. :)</p>

<p>Don’t worry about Hill. Everyone bonds around the fact that they didn’t get into the quad, and they usually end up forming a tight-knit community. And you have a ridiculously convenient location for the chemistry building, engineering, DRL, etc. (I was a physics major, so I basically lived in the chem and physics buildings). And you have a dining hall in the basement of Hill, which is really convenient in the winter when it is really cold and you don’t want to go outside.</p>
<p>You didn’t get any of the classes you requested?? Interesting. In four years, I got into every class I ever wanted to take (albeit not always through advanced registration). Just stalk Penn in Touch obsessively and spots will open up.</p>
<p>And your parents don’t have health insurance that would allow you to waive out of Penn’s coverage?</p>
<p>I actually didn’t think Hill was bad at all. Their dining hall, I think, is the better than all the alternatives. Plus, while rooms are small, they didn’t seem all that bad. I was in KC-E last year, and I thought it was notably worse than Hill. Some people say that KC has a dining hall with “higher quality.” I thought that was bogus tho. Plus, the rooms in KC just for some reason didn’t seem as nice as those in hill to me. Admittedly, they are much bigger tho. If I had to choose between those two dorms, I definitely would have signed up for hill.</p>

<p>Okay I dont even know where to start but I’ll try my best. first I would like to start off by saying that you are VERY VERY mistaken to listen to trolls on this forum. first off, there are only a few of them and I’m pretty sure those few trolls go around and write everything bad they could possibly make up about penn to spoil its reputation. penn is a highly selective school and I understand it’s easy to get angry when you get denied. then you want to pick at the schools only weak spot: it’s confusion with penn state by a bunch of uneducated trash. if the person youre talking to doesn’t recognize penn and its prestige, they should be really embarrassed and you should feel embarrassed for them. people stupidly listen to the trolls that you are speaking of without even visiting the school. one walk down locust walk should enthrall you and make you wonder in awe, how could anyone speak of this school in a negative light?</p>
<p>second, who CARES what people say about the school? I’m a sophomore transfer student and now going into my junior year. I can compare this school with my previous to get a better feeling of how this school fits into the broad spectrum. I’ve been wanting to share this forever but I don’t think there is a better college life than the one you can find at penn. if you’re in Wharton, walk around with your chest out and money leaking from your butt. if you’re not in Wharton, walk around and have a hell of a time making new friends by being unified with others under the umbrella of insulting ridiculous Wharton students. the only reason why this works is because penn will take what effort any student puts into it and take them that far. it will shape you into a social, streetsmart, booksmart human being that can dominate the world and lead lesser muggles. </p>
<p>third, like I said, I’m a transfer student and probably have as many friends at penn as a regular junior. people here aren’t generalizable. they are too diverse to say that “people at penn are pretentious” or “people at penn are nice”. there are *******s and there are VERY good people. and the difference between penn and a ton of other schools is that you get to choose who you meet and who you stick with as friends, and whoever you end up finding will be the brightest most motivated students you will ever befriend.</p>
<p>fourth of all, this may sound silly but it doesn’t hurt to have a handful of close friends that go to the Wharton school. where else are you going to meet a group of friends who will all go on to be billionaires and ceo’s of fortune 500 companies in the future? students that graduate from penn are always in good company for life. maybe this is another reason why penn graduates lead some of the happiest lives in the world. they also lead lesser muggles as I said earlier (laugh at my joke. now.)</p>
<p>I can’t remember what number point I was on because I’m typing on my iPhone and can’t see what I wrote above but I’ll keep going. penn will keep you busier than any other school. why? 34th to 39th between walnut and spruce (basically the heart of campus) is like the central park of Philadelphia, but nicer and without the outdoor ping pong tables. and when you want to go back to the city feel, you can walk on walnut or spruce or even go downtown to olde city to see traditional Philly architecture or to Chinatown to see a lot of asian people. enjoy some of the biggest bands and artists perform at festival pier on the weekends. my point is, you will NEVER be bored here. balancing coursework and playing will become easier and easier and you yourself will grow as a person for the hard work you put into this. </p>
<p>I can’t believe already a year has gone by since I transferred here. When I’m playing with friends, time flies. when I’m studying, I beg time not to go. and time likes playing hard to get, so it still flies. so time always flies here. because time flies you’re busy growing and becoming an awesome person. </p>
<p>LASTLY. if anyone insults hill college house ever again, I might just…nvm. hill is the best dorm on campus for freshman. I cannot stress this enough. every hill resident I’ve ever met including myself and my hallmates still are best friends with the people they’ve met in hill. the quad? lame. people only smoke weed and drink there and don’t talk much to their neighbors. you can smoke weed and drink in hill, with good company. hill is the most overlooked dorm ever. its benefits outweigh the crappy appearance from the outside. people who talk bad about hill have NEVER lived there before. don’t listen to them. listen to ME. I’ve lived there. </p>

mention. the weather here is effing awesome. although it’s not always sunny in Philadelphia, it’s sunny often enough. also I would like to warn you. fall and spring on locust walk will BLOW you away. so be prepared, PENN15. and don’t be discouraged by our “PENN15” ***** jokes. it’s all out of love, freshmen. ;)</p>

<p>As our founder said very wisely: “Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain - and most fools do.” Set a good intention and focus on positive aspects of Penn:</p>

<li><p>Bad weather. Yes, it’s cold and gray a lot, but it’s a great excuse to get a snazzy winter wardrobe and have epic midnight snowball fights! And yes, the snowball massacre of 2010 took place outside of Hill, so be prepared.</p></li>
<li><p>Philly has a lot of crime. What else is new? Moreover, what major US city doesn’t? It is also home to a ton of incredible musicians (Philly Orchestra, anyone?), artists, and intellectuals too, not to mention it was the first capital of the United States! There are terrible parts just as there are in most cities, but Center City and University City are safe, fun, and full of life. Visit Old City sometime too! It’s very safe and can be a great diversion from finals. Bottom line: just be smart and have your wits about you and you’ll be FINE. Visit Columbia sometime and tell me you honestly feel safer near the Bronx. Or in New Haven at Yale, for that matter.</p></li>
<li><p>You got your last dorm choice. We’ve all been there, so suck it up and deal! It’s actually not that bad if you approach your roommates/hallmates with a positive attitude and are open to meeting new people. Yes, you’ll have a tiff with your roommate or someone in your building over something stupid, but just chalk it up to learning how to cohabit with other humans. Believe me, the rewards outweigh the costs.</p></li>
<li><p>Health insurance is bad/expensive/cumbersome. I wasn’t aware student plans could be anything either than those things. </p></li>
<li><p>You got aced out of courses you wanted. Though this never happened to me at Penn (literally), it’s certainly something that students experience all over, except perhaps at small LACs or similarly tiny schools. Worst case scenario: an opening doesn’t present itself and you have to choose a different course (there are plenty to fill requirements, don’t worry) or wait a semester or two for it. </p></li>
</ol>
<p>Honestly, you’re psyching yourself out. Just chill and be excited. Do you have any idea how many people you beat out for that spot?! (Actually, you probably do…) You worked very hard to get where you are, so relax and just be open to new experiences and don’t get bogged down by negative perception. Set a good intention and find things about Penn that get you excited or remind you why you applied - I promise, there are an infinite number of things to choose from.</p>
