I do, I think most people disparage metal saying it is all screaming and worshiping the devil. This is very untrue. I don't worship the devil, that would never cross my mind. Devil Worshiping is black metal- mostly in Europe with the exception of Manson.
Anyways- heres a list of bands and songs that I find very talented and worth trying to listen to.
Shadows Fall- "The Light that Blinds", "Redemption", "Ghost of Past Failures"
All that Remains-"The Air I Breathe", "This Calling", "Become the Catalyst"
Chimaira-"Nothing Remains", "Power Trip", "Ressurection"

For those of you who are brave enough, try listening to Job For a Cowboy- they use a singing technique called Pig Squealing- it is a very interesting sound- try thier songs: "Entombment of a Machine" and "The Rising Tide"

I had the opportunity to see Shadows Fall, Chimaira, and Job For a Cowboy at the Sounds of the Underground Tour, and I ever since, I have been enthralled with metal.

Most people disparage metal because it is not enjoyable to listen to for them.

I agree. While I'm fine with acknowledging the fact that many metal bands are probably very talented, I just don't like the sound. I cannot stand listening to metal music, no matter how "talented" the band is supposed to be. I think that I'm fairly open to all types of music- I listen to everything from the Knife to the Zombies to Sigur Ros- but I simply hate the sound of metal!!!

People say they hate the sound of metal, but I don't really see metal as having a real particular sound. I think when people say that they are thinking of screaming vocals, etc.

A lot of people don't know about the more underground bands and European bands who are doing such new things with metal. I really believe there's a type of metal for everyone.

Personally, I'm not a fan of screaming, but I love Symphonic and Prog metal.

Dear everyone who says you do not like metal, try listening to some prog and power metal. All it takes is a minute of youtube. Go listen to "Center of the Universe" by Kamelot. Great song.

prog and power metal are more accessible definitely. a lot of fans of those styles later start enjoying other styles more -- death metal, black metal etc

I'm not a huge fan of metal or anything, and it is definitely not my favorite type of music, but I do listen to it sometimes and really like some metal bands (Metallica, Pantera, Megadeth, Judas Priest, Sabbath, Ozzy, Slayer, Kamelot, and Dragonforce).

I've never heard of X Japan before, and some of you guys seem to really like them. Does anyone want to tell me about them (maybe what type of metal they play or what other bands they sound like) because I might want to try buying some of their stuff.

I went through a metal phase right around ninth grade. I quit listening extensively because I started to find it lyrically shallow; there's no getting around the fact that the same handful of themes end up used over and over and over again. Another thing that irked me was the way a band would compose a pretty melody and then cover it up with so much distortion and clutter that it would be "ugly". I can understand that the artist wants to evoke an emotion, but a talented artist can evoke all the same emotions without compromising the aesthetic.

That being said, I still get out my Iron Maiden or Hammerfall cds every so often - good stuff, that.
