Who said the Pac-10 is a weak conference?

Who do you guys think is the best Cal football player in the last 10 years?

My vote: Geoff MacArthur

Actually, since you set a 10-year threshold, I'm going to go with Deltha O'Neal, (literally) running away. Consider this. In 1999, he was Pac-10 Conference Defensive Player of the Year and consensus first-team All-American. In that year, he had 9 INT's and returned 4 of them for TD's, setting the NCAA single-season record for most INT's returned for TD, which I think is still a record that still stands today. He tied the NCAA career record for most INT's returned for TD with 5. He left Cal holding the school record for career all-purpose yards. He is a member of Cal's All-Century team, one of only a handful of Cal players of the last 10 years to do so. {Then of course, in the NFL, he's already been awarded 2 Pro Bowl selections, and in 2005 set the Cincinnati Bengals franchise record for most INT's in a season with 10.}

You could also make a case for Marshawn Lynch (Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year and 1st team All-American, and 2nd all-time Cal rusher, despite having only been a starter for 2 seasons). You could also talk about punter Nick Harris, who set the NCAA record for career punting yardage. But I still think O'Neal's accomplishments at Cal, particularly his glittering senior year, still outclasses Lynch's and Harris's accomplishments, impressive as they were.

Now, if we were talking about Cal Bears who made the most impact in the NFL in the last 10 years, I think that answer is undoubtedly Tony Gonzalez, whose accomplishments already easily qualify him for the NFL Hall of Fame (selection to 8 Pro Bowls, holds the record for most career TD's by a tight end).

sakky: great insight. All of those guys would probably make a strong case for the Cal "dream team."

tvaldivi, I'm not understanding the way you're reading that. The way I read it was if there's a three way tie in Pac-10 play then the two teams with the best overall record(as in spanning back into time where UCLA leads Cal 49-28-1) would go to the Rose Bowl.

What other "Overall Head to Head" record is there?

^ Not so, Megathunder. Pac-10 will only look at records over the current season. They'll go down the standings in the Pac-10, and see how the top tied teams won/loss against each Pac-10 member, according to season ending standings in order.

Fortunately, every team plays every team in the Pac-10, round robin, so these situations would be quite rare.

I got my Cal/Stanfurd student ticket and I am doing my happy dance! -- BTW, how long does it take to get there and back and does anyone know if Cal provides cheap bus there and back for students?

Darn, I forgot to get Big Game tickets.

Beatchick, when I went to the 100th Big Game in 1997, there was a shuttle bus that picked people up from the Campus circle drive. I don't remember the cost...if there was any. May want to contact the athletic office.

Stanford is not super easy to get to...Go south and cross the Bay via the Dumbarton bridge. Takes about an hour by car - longer if traffic.

GO Bears, beat ASU!!! Anyone watching the O-SC game?

Also, pick up this month's edition of ESPN magazine. There's an article on the tree-sitters and what they mean as far as Cal football is concerned. There's also an article on Dennis Dixson, so the Pac-10 is well-represented.

Well, Oregon won, so I guess if we beat SC too, than SC will definitely be out of the picture.
Hey, how about Aaron Rodgers? I think he should make the Cal "Dream Team" too.

WHAT NOW! WHAT NOW!!! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DUCKS!!!!!!!!!!

LOL, as you can tell i'm very happy :d

I Love Jordan Kay!

So UCLA lost, that's good. Now Cal, pleeease, pleeease, beat ASU.

Gawd, Cal seriously is the Chicago Cubs of college football.

Should be another "Game of the Century" at Autzen next week.

Cal did not play well. ASU came out much better in the second half, and Cal resorted back to their "conservative" play calling. I think Oregon is on top of the country right now. ASU will lose 24-14, IMO. ASU is a GOOD team, don't get me wrong, but Oregon is GREAT. And, they're playing at home.

Blue: Rodgers could make a case, but I would put Bartkowski, and possibly Roth, ahead of him. Definitely the best in the Tedford Era though.

Speaking of which, let's come up with a name for the Tedford Era. My vote goes to "The Teddy Bears"

O god, If Oregon beats Arizona State, shouldn't they be at least 2? I mean Boston College doesn't deserve anything@!!!!

Come on now. If nothing else, BC did at least beat the (currently) #8 team in the country, and did it on the road. I think that deserves some credit.

Time for Longshore to sit. His leg is just not strong enuf to go four quarters. He had DeSean open on that pick -- Nate just didn't have a leg to push on to get the ball across his body downfield.

Agree with sakky: the BC quarterback was extremely impressive on game winning drives (unlike Cal's qbs which throw picks).

yes, yes, they actually do. BUT if Oregon wins out with beating arizona state, UCLA and oregon state, do you think they should be ranked higher than BC even if BC wins out?

I'm trying to decide what caused the picks, Longshore's head or his ankle? If it was his ankle, then that's on Jeff Tedford. The coach needs to decide which QB gives him the best chance to win. A gimpy Longshore vs. an inexperienced Riley? I say he should have put in the latter.

Now if it was Longshore's decision making, which caused the UCLA pick, then can we say reverting to true form...
