I am planning on applying Early Decision at Middlebury. My prospective major is Biology, with a minor in Environmental Science. I’m also thinking I might double major in East Asian Studies, or something of the like. I already know that I will be asking my French teacher for a recommendation letter since she’s had me in her class for four years. I know it would be a good idea to get one of my STEM related teachers to write me a recommendation, but my AP Chem teacher moved, and my Honors Precalc teacher wasn’t the biggest fan of me even though I did well in her class. On the other hand, my AP Lang teacher from last year absolutely loved me, and my US History teacher was really impressed by how well I did in her class. So would it be better to get recommendation letters from teachers I’ve had that aren’t directly related to my prospective major? I’m not exactly sure where to go from here, and I really need to decide soon.
Contact your AP Chem teacher – even though he/she moved, they should be otherwise amenable to writing a LOR for you. It’s not required that he/she is at your school currently. Your perspective major is irrelevant – it’s the quality of the work you did in front of the potential LOR writer.
Agree, talk to your guidance counselor and/or the chairperson of the science dept. and see if you can get contact information for your chem teacher. If you can’t get the chem teacher, I’d go with the AP Lang or US History teacher.
thank you for the advice. I’m not sure if my AP Chem teacher will be super into writing my recc letter. I definitely wasn’t one of her favorite students. I wasn’t like obnoxious in her class or anything she just wasn’t super into me. I think AP Lang might be who I go with. But thanks!
