So, technically I’m already a student here, so I don’t really belong on this thread but I couldn’t help it, I had to comment and say
YAY!!! WELCOME NEW TERPS I’M SO SO EXCITED I BET YOU ALL WILL LOVE IT!!!

and to anyone still decided COME COME COME ITS THE BEST EVER!!!

I finally confirmed my enrollment a few days ago after having a hard time deciding between a couple of schools. i think I made the right choice, i’m so so excited!

DS will definitely be attending!! Woo hoo! Chemical & Life Sciences Dept.- Biochemistry Major-Honors. Confirmed enrollment and registered for orientation.

Ditto that ElBlufer. I’ll be visiting American U next week, really just to make sure I don’t wanna go there. I’ll probably be confirming at UMd end of next week.

i think with regards to academics, it’s sightly more focused than UMd. i mean, you wouldn’t go to American for a life science or engineering or whatnot, but poli sci and international relations are pretty strong there. UMd just has a broader focus and obviously more rescources. i’ll let you know what i think of it this week…

Rschlegel, although I’d love to see you at UMD, don’t close off your options quite yet. Wait until you see American, and see it with an open mind. If you like UMD better, then go there; If you like AU better and there isn’t a huge financial difference between the two, give the school a good look before choosing.

On another note, if you do like UMD better, can’t wait to see you this fall!

Yeah i haven’t quite made a decision yet, but i have a feeling i’m not gonna like AU as much…idk, we’ll see. But they are financially about the same so i’m definitely gonna give it a chance.

Sorry, I won’t be. Actually, I came here today regarding this:
Does anyone know how to decline admission? The link they keep sending me is only for accepting admission. Did they send a paper form that I can’t find? Or can I just send a polite e-mail?
Thanks!

^You sound almost resigned to your fate, haha.

I feel almost the same way. I don’t really want to attend College Park. Their Comp Sci department is tops, the campus is nice… but I’ve been many, many times. Maybe that’s part of the problem - College Park is so very familiar. In addition, a truckload of people from my high school will be matriculating there, and I’d rather surround myself with fresh, new faces in a new, unexplored environment.

But I received B/K… I don’t want to sound ungrateful because I’m not; I’m honored. It would be so much cheaper than anywhere else I want to go. I just don’t want to go.

Anyway, there’s about a 33.3 percent chance I will be attending fall 2009, ‘barring a lottery win or some other unlikely occurrence.’ Heh.

aberdeen15, it is amazing how similar and yet different our perspectives are. I feel the exact same way about my local large, state school, ohio state. It’s less than an hour away, everybody and their brother goes there or will, and the campus is just another part of what I find an incredibly boring place to live. I was completely opposed to going there from the beginning of this whole process, and I still am.

Just thought it was interesting how it seems that the admissions process for some has become a game of musical chairs. Your reluctant last resort is my top choice, and I’m looking forward to the change in scenery.

Don’t get me wrong, Maryland is still one of my top choices. I also got B/K and I’m very grateful, but after years of work I got into my for lack of a better term ‘dream school’ only to get an impossible financial aid package from them.

But I’d feel the same way as the above posters about any SUNY school.

^Hm that sucks, I’m sorry. Fortunately my ‘dream school’ is almost affordable… but College Park is still basically free. Have you already appealed your fin aid package?

rschlegel, I’m glad I’m not the only one That’s how I feel exactly. Musical chairs… yeah, it’s kinda like that. My mom tells me all the time, “You just don’t appreciate College Park because it’s so close. It’s an excellent school. It’s not something to overlook,” blah, blah.

well if it means anything, you are fortunate to have such an excellent state school! i know coming from MA getting admitted is a lot more challenging so we have all sorts of excitement up here when we get in to umdcp. but i completely understand, seeing as how UMass is so unappealing to me because I feel like it would just be high school all over again and the point of college is starting fresh.

My son will be at UMD starting Fall 2009 in the Architecture LEP. We are attending the open house on April 17. We live in southern Virginia. He’s really excited about UMD and getting into the Architecture program. I ordered a hoodie and t-shirt for him right away and got a mom sticker for my car. We are both looking forward to visiting the campus, he’s been there but I haven’t and he didn’t go on an official tour.

I know how you guys feel about your local school, he got accepted at Old Dominion which is just a few miles from home, but I completely understand not wanting to go to your local college (I grew up in Ithaca NY and I did not want to go to Cornell!). Virginia Tech is several hours away (actually further than UMD) but he didn’t want to go there either because of all the kids from his HS who end up there.) I made him visit to show him how far away it was but he convinced me it wasn’t the right school for him.

I’m sure you will all have a great experience in college and learn and grow so much you will be surprised and delighted in the people you will become over the next four years.

yeah i agree with whats bein said lol im from NY and i applied to only 2 colleges here (bing and cornell) haha i just wana get out of NY for college… so ill pay the extra 10-12 a year just to go maryland lol

I’m also visiting on the 17th! I’ve visited before, but my parents haven’t. Currently I am between 4 schools; Maryland (Smith), Delaware (Lerner), Indiana (Kelley), and Buffalo (SOM). Of the schools Maryland is my top choice, but my parents are more interested in Buffalo (since it is a SUNY, and I can afford without any loans). I’m also excited to get away from ny.
