who uses ms word for school?

I want to buy ms office to do my school work and stuff. But my question is: if I buy ms office for $150 right now (2003), can I upgrade it for FREE when a newer version comes out (2007 I believe)? I don't want to buy it now and have to buy a new one next year. Does anyone know?

You'll have to purchase the 2007 version separately I believe.

In the meantime...a freeware alternative to MS Word

do you have a mac? because when i bought mine, the guy told me that i could buy ms office now ($150) but that would be a waste because you can't upgrade for free; you have to buy the new version for another $150.

learn to be a pirate

you can download the trial and just reinstall the trial every.. 3 months was it?

When is the new version (2007) coming out? What month?

I thought you can only use the trial once per computer. That's what happened with my old computer.

Openoffice is great. Also, if you want you files to be accesable everywhere, school, home, library, you can use writely.com for reduced functionality.

Can I make graphs with it?

Actually, yes you will get it for free. There is a program called express upgrade. If you buy a computer from October 26, 2006-March 31, 2007, you will get a free Vista upgrade to the Vista version that corresponds to your XP version. I think Office may have one, search for it.

Masterus might be right I look at buying electronics this way. If you want to wait for the new software to come out so you can buy the best, you will always be waiting. You just have to know what you want at that time and get it. I was going to wait and get the new intel macs but I decided not to wait and just buy a powerbook. I actually like my powerbook a lot better than any of my friends macbooks. You never know, you may like office 2003 better than office 2007.

Otherwise, I suggest openoffice like everyone else or just get it through limewire.

Can i make tables/graphs with openoffice?

yep. You can do everything with openoffice that you can do with ms office. there are a few extra features like saving files as pdfs and editing them too. I think the word art and clip art is better. Overall, its superior to ms office for windows. I rate it the same as office for mac.

Except Powerpoint, there are only 2 default templates and they're ugly:(

I use Office 2007 beta :)
PS. I don't plan on writing anything scientific in word -- LaTeX for life!

how is 07 beta?

It's beta and it was downloadable (MS site) for free but I admit I downloaded it from BitTorrent after re-install of OS :P

I guess I'm just too lazy to go to their site but they have it for mac on there too? I don't have a windows comp to put it on.

According to Wikipedia, you have to wait until release :</p>

=( thanks
