Who would like to chance me for the University of Chicago?

I'm fairly interested in UChicago right now, and I get the feeling like it may be a reach, but not too much of a reach.

Stats:
GPA: 3.729 Unweighted, 4.301 Weighted

SAT (2400 w/writing): 690 Reading, 760 Math, 630 Writing, 2080 Total
ACT (w/writing): 34 Math, 32 Reading, 32 Science, 25 English, 31 Composite

APs: Computer Science AB (5), United States History (3), Calculus BC (5), Chemistry (Sr. Yr), Physics A (Sr. Yr), Physics B (Sr. Yr)

Extracurriculars: Band (Since 4th Grade), Jazz Band (Senior Year), Chess Team (All four years, Co-Captain last year, Going to be Captain Senior year), Junior Engineering Technical Society TEAM Competition (2 Years + Senior Year), WYSE (various subjects, 2 yrs. + Senior year), Student Mentor (Sr. Year)

Senior Year Class Load:
Honors British Literature English IV, Multi-Variable Calculus (Math V), AP Chemistry, AP Physics, Survey of Music, Western Civilization (History of Chicago basically),Theology IV, German IV, Wind Ensemble

I don't really volunteer a lot, which isn't great, and I'm going to work on that a bit (I hope). I think that the variety in my class selection over all 4 years, as well as my activities that I participate in, make me have a bit of a chance. I know that if I demonstrate a desire to play in the band at UC, that may pique their interest.

Thanks in advance!

Out of the gate, Academics are weak or at least won’t help you. In addition, ECs are not good and certainly don’t make up for weaker academics. Yet, hope lies in the essay which Chicago values. As of now, though, Chicago is a pretty high reach. Though, you live in Chicago so your school may have a connection/preference for Chicago adcoms. Are you aware of any preferential choice?

Not specifically, but we do have a few grads go there every year, and I get a tonne of stuff from them through the mail.

^ trust me, they out tons of stuff to EVERYONE. I wouldn’t classify it as a sign of interest. One dad even showed up to an information session at a local library and complained about why U of Chicago was sending so much material to his child…awkward moment to say the least.

You are honestly on the lower end of accepted applicants in terms of GPA/SAT/EC; I would recommend that you study for the SAT and shoot for 2200+, and give your fullest effort to get all A’s senior year. Other than that focus on your essays and you have a good chance.

Try to get all As from senior classes.
Raise your ACT (34+) or SAT(2250+) to have a decent chance.

Are you taking SAT IIs?

My HS has sent many kids to U Chicago. Most of the unhooked admits had very high numbers.

I guess that, being the math geek I am, I see my stats as okay because I’m above the bottom end of the middle 50% scale, meaning my test scores are better than AT THE LEAST, 25% of those who got accepted. I am shooting for all A’s this year, and I might retake the ACT. I’m very pleased with the 31 though, and I don’t really want to spend another $50 or whatever on retaking it. I wouldn’t mind being deferred and then accepted (I had a friend who was deferred then accepted w/ a 30 ACT, way lower SAT, close to the same UW GPA, no where near my class load, so his W GPA was much lower). Thanks for the input thus far!
