Who would you hire?

The schools both have excellent reps, but there is more to it than that ... student performance, internships, references, related activities. Given the schools are both so strong, pick the one which is right for you and then start working on the other factors which result in getting the job placement you eventually want.

anyone else have an opinion? Thank you so much :)

I would hire both and put the Dukie at an office in the South and the Stanford one in an office in California.

I'd really go with stanford. It is comparable to HYPCPC etc.. Duke did not gain "prestige" until mid 1980's. Stanford is just known to go above and beyond.

I like your answer LFWB dad, but that doesn't make my decision any easier :)

r1400, yes, Duke seems to be the new kid on the block. Do you see this trend continuing in the next few years, and perhaps overtaking HYP eventually?

In reality, having hired many, many people, at all levels, school really isn't a determining factor. Resumes only get you an interview and both would get interviews.

So, don't make your decision based on who you will be competing with for some fictional job. Go to the place you like best.

If you think you like them both equally, then flip a coin and if when it comes up, if there is any feeling of disappointment whatsoever, go to the other place.

Yeah, oracle I get what you're asking, simply which is better for eventual job placement with a well known firm, but actually the way you phrased your original post leads to the answer (there isn't any clear winner imo).

My son works for Goldman...first of all, it's gotta be helpful to go where Goldman recruits on campus which is true for Stanford and Duke of course, and after that, momfromme in post 5 has it right. Suppose 2 resumes look the same....after your first on campus interview, followed if you make the cut by the second on campus interview the next day, followed again if you make the cut by the third interview in NYC, and this is for summer internship (!), there's no way any 2 people are the same.

What a great choice! The obvious questions...east coast vs west, etc, where do you get the best "feel"? Can you visit (again?) even one of them? Both have the warmer winter factor vs HYP competitors. I would have said Duke for the b-ball before this year ;) Good luck!

Hey guys,

Thanks for some really great postings.

LFWB dad, it was helpful that you said "both would get interviews".
Just out of curiosity, I assume that Duke and Stanford are both in that 'top tier' of schools for job placements, but how many schools out there would land you that same interview? Are we talking ~ top 10 (HYP, Columbia, Dartmouth ....) or is it more top 30 (USC, Tufts...)?

Thanks again for all of your help

stanford...

Please STOP with the versus threads and do the research yourself! Make your OWN opinion. Make a phone call, visit the campuses, arrange a phone interview with a student via the admissions office (most schools do this), compare programs and majors. There is no way you could possibly think that Stanford and Duke are the same if you have done anywhere near the amount of research you should have. This is an important decision for you is it not? Don't relegate such an important matter to complete strangers who have no idea who you are, where you come from, and what you aspire to be. College is about becoming a competent adult, and here is where you can start.

I am sorry for sounding harsh but this is what you must do.

tokyo

I would hire the student from Yale who happens to have family connections.

lol OldPerson

anyone else have an opinion on which school has a slightly more prestigous reputation.....Duke, Stanford, or too close to call?

Thanks Thanks Thanks :)
