Yeah, I have a car too and a wife, so my rent will be split. We have a 100lb. dog so we'll be looking at a house with a yard and I'm sure no bad neighborhood in Ithaca can even come CLOSE to bad neighborhoods here. Additionally, I'm not as concerned with closeness to Cornell, considering my car. We are both used to SF Bay Area and Los Angeles traffic; I find it hard to imagine that Ithaca can come close to that; so a commute won't be a problem.

In fact, with home prices where they are, we'd consider just buying. We currently rent a 1BR, 800sqft house for $1375 and if we bought it, it would cost nearly half a million. Can we say "inflated"? So, comparatively, I think we'll be fine in Ithaca. Thank you for the advice!

Well...now that I know you're married and are coming with other attachments...somewhere a little further from campus might not be such a bad idea.

I really never got the sense that there were too many (if any!) shady areas in Ithaca. I always felt safe there. Traffic isn't bad at all....in the early mornings and afternoons you'll get stuck in the school traffic...but compared to what you've experienced in CA and what I'm dealing with in New Orleans...it's not bad at all.

I know of a couple grad students who bought houses/condos in Ithaca...since they were going to be there for a while :)

ilivefree, i've been looking at a few houses and if we get in maybe we should split one together :-P
i want to live off campus so that i can live with my boyfriend, because we're obviously not going to get a dorm room together. and dewdrop, i've actually been considering having my parents buy whatever house i want to stay in because i'll be there for 3 or 4 years if i get in and then possible for grad school so maybe i'll be able to make a good argument. is it easy to sell or rent out houses once you don't need them anymore?

ironicallyunsure, nice idea (really), but my wife and i are far to difficult to live with; i'm sure you and your man are best finding your own place. :)

i would encourage you to build a business case for your parents to buy something. the market is wonderful right now and with a college town, they would surely have no problem renting it out (and could be selective by only targeting grad students, thus avoiding destructive behavior). if they have money in other markets, they may benefit from pulling out a portion, using it as a down, and letting you and your boyfriend pay the mortgage, thus only having to serve role of landlord (i.e. fixing stuff that breaks). by the end of your time there, they would have return on investment just from your rent and natural property market recovery. i'm babbling, but make a case. you have one.

i'll definitely run the idea by my parents. they already know that i refuse to live on campus, so i'll probably be able to convince them to turn the rent money they'd be spending into some sort of finance thing.

I submitted mine yesterday, so I'm fine. What I wanted to point out is that they have downloaded all the data from the website after only 20 minutes have passed since the deadline.

It was really... me. I don't know if that's what they are looking for, but I figure that if it is, then I will be headed to the right school.

It may not have been typo-less. I'm afraid to look. I was typing up until 11:58. But it's the complete and honest truth, and I've been putting the development of the ideas which I put in that application as priority #1 for the past three weeks. So although I only really typed the stuff in the last 32 hours, there is substance, I think.

Haha, Cornell has extended the application deadline for all transfer applicants to March 31st! I emailed them and then checked my Applicant account and apparently they're so overloaded with a record number of freshman applications that until they've made decisions on the all the freshman applications, they can't start on the transfers. The transfer application volume seems to be quite hefty as well. So I think mid-May is the earliest anyone will hear back. I'm so damn nervous and little bit disappointed. So many applicants for transfer?! That means less chance for me getting in.....and everyone else of course.
