so.. who's applying to smcm this year??

My D is probably going to apply. Even though we have not been to the campus yet, she is enthralled by the"location re: outdoors, on the peninsula, etc. She is also very interested in the "happiness factor" of the students in a academically challenging environment.

As an Atlanta resident, my concern is primarily the remote location and how isolated she might feel. The posts seem reassuring. If she is admitted, we will visit before making a decision ( if not before),

Her stats: 4.4 Weighted- 3.7 unweighted-
Extremely rigorous curriculum- will graduate from private preparatory school in top 2% of class.
SAT ( on one sitting) 1320- M+CR
Ranked junior tennis player
Chairman of Debate Club
Cello in school performing ensemble
Started peer tutoring program in math.

Other schools she is applying to: Rhodes, Furman, Sewanee, Wofford, Ogelthorpe, Cornell ( reach), Presbyterian- maybe Georgia Tech ( in college of liberal arts.

S just sent in his application last week. He is interested in SMCM for its reputation in the sciences- especially environmental and biology as well as the fact that it is a public school. He is thinking he wants to go into landscape architecture, so he ultimately would need to go to grad school if he stays on that career path. We have not visited either, but it looks like a great small school!

My D is applying. We visited last fall and it is a beautiful location but I agree VERY remote. This is a VERY different school than most of the schools she is looking to apply to (big, urban/suburban schools). She has a 1230 SAT (580 M and 650 V) and a 3.6 GPA (weighted). Not sure what she wants to study - but thought the student body seemed very nice and a place she would easily fit in. So we will keep our fingers crossed for her. Good luck to those applying!

SMCM is on my S's "short list." After visiting campus in August, other schools dropped off the list. He loved the waterfront setting and activities (ever the beach boy), as well as the strong academics (esp history), small class sizes, and school spirit he's seen in sports and extracurriculars. He has not seen the campus with students though, so we are going back in a couple weeks for a second visit.

I smile when I see "remote" -- it's a different perspective, because to us, anywhere with a WalMart and and Outback Steakhouse within a few minutes of campus can't be too remote!

FWIW -- the folks we've talked with at SMCM have been genuinely warm and helpful, with a good sense of humor as a bonus. Of course, that's their job, but our impression (formed after many many college visits with S1 and S2) is that they love the school and what they do there. It's a quality of life choice that I expect many students appreciate as well.

georgiatwins- is your daughter planning to play tennis if she goes to st marys? i think i will probably play there and although the team isn't that great if your daughter is ranked too that should really help bringing more talent in there. you should email the coach, he will be really excited she is considering it.
